You could try turning the 'pitchbend loop' into another percussion instrument. Something like this.. Apply some of the suggestions here, make the modulation more consistent, make up perhaps a few pitchbend patterns and switch beteween them, 'sync' it in some way. Stick the loop behind a midi'd gate ...

Check out this hd suspension/damping solution. Too simple or what? I think it can be replicated quite easily by a 'layman'.
