syncing a computer to teac 1/2 inch tape recorder

looking how to do this, the machine is completely analog, with 8 in 8 out rca connectors.. I saw an mts-1000 might be able to do this but couldn't find any operating manual so i'm not sure + it's worth 3 times the price i paid for the tape recorder

. Anyone knows a cheap solution to this?

First off, it is adviseable to sync the recorder to the PC instead of vice versa. Reason is that for sync'ing, the recorder can easily speed up and down without glitches, but a PC is locked to the samplerate clock and would cause jumps or some glitching when it is not sync'ed tightly to the soundcard's clock.

I don't know if the recorder supports synchronisation to MTC, SMPTE? These are things to find out about, then you can send the sync from your PC to the recorder and slave the recorder to your sequencer.

Facing the same problem soon, gonna try and link this old 8-track...

no, the thing hasn't got any builtin smpte or mtc...

there has to be some device that generates and accepts timecode recorded on one of the tracks? isn't the tascam mts-1000 built around that concept?

thanks for your input, i have a feeling a lot of people will get back to analog recording soon

stripe a track with mtc or smpte and then go. the tascam won't do anything fancier.

not easy to decide upon what device i'll buy though... that rme fireface 800 look like it's got the goodies... and more! cheaper solution would be a syncman, any devices you guys can recomend?

btw, analog recording is VERY dead. there will be no tape available SOON. there are only one or two companies still making tape and they are on shaky ground. i'm sure 2" tape will die last, but i expect the price to skyrocket from the already astronomical price of $175-200(us) for 15mins.....well, cassettes will probably be here a little longer....

I still have my old XR20, works with MTClock, made by XRI Systems.
It does all you need, reading and striping, has a clear display for parameters and time/frames values.
Connections: Tape In/Out, Midi In, Thrue, four Out, supply.
Thing never let me down, you could make me an offer if you'd like

I've been trying for months to sell my MOTU MIDI Express XT (parallel not USB) (MIDI patch bay + SMPTE striping and sync-MTC-to-SMPTE) for $50 Canadian plus shipping. Nobody wants the damned thing, and neither do I!

Gary, after reading your post i found out that the tape market indeed seems to be quite dead. ah well, i won't be using this in a production context, more of a personal one. So i called quantigy here in Paris and ordered what i'm gonna need to record 20 songs or so... thanks for the heads up
