Hi all,

Well I have a quick question for those who are familiar with either of these apps

I own a low end version of acid that I do not really use at all since it was some what of a freebie of sorts, called Acid DJ, was a 30 dollar app, and doesnt do a whole lot aside from let you loop 8 seperate tracks.

Now, a while back I entered a remix contest and won a whole mess of sony apps as the grand prize, one of those prises was the blue box version of Sony Vegas 5 + DvD, but here is where I need the help.

I am interested in using Acid for some loop edits, I run Nuendo as my host but I realize that Acid is the best tool for loops, so what I am wondering is..

If I own Vegas 5 is there any reason to use Acid? dont these apps basically do the exact same thing but vegas is the considered their pro end version for audio/video?

In simple form, is it worth it to buy Acid Pro if I already own Vegas 5?

To be completely honest since I have won Vegas I have yet to install the app since I was considering of getting rid of it to get more needed gear but now that I am considering Acid as a possible loop solution, would it be worth while to keep Vegas instead of using Acid as I had asked.

Thanks in advance,

Cheers!

I have both. Most of the functions of AcidPro (up to version 4 anyway) are actually in Vegas. And if you download the Vegas update 5.0b (they're now up to 5.0d) then that adds the "import loops at project tempo" so you get auto stretching.

There are quite a few things Vegas doesn't do *as easily* as Acid, such as manipulating loops on the timeline. And if you change the project tempo globally in Vegas your loops won't stretch or compress to fit (unlike Acid). But how often are you likely to need that ?

AcidPro5 was released a couple of months ago and adds various things which definitely aren't in Vegas like VST effect support, rewire slave etc. On paper a lot of it is pretty good, but the release itself is buggy and bloated. I'm holding off for a while.

One thing which may bother you is that there's no MIDI in Vegas or VSTi.

Personally I'm extremely disappointed at Acid5 and I'm a huge Acid fan. Judging by the amount of frustrated users begging for a bugfix update on the Sony forum, it hasn't been a huge success.

But certainly AcidPro3 (my favourite) and AcidPro4 are pretty good.

My bet is that Vegas 6 will probably incorporate a lot of the enhancements made in AcidPro5 - and probably with a lot less bugs.

So my advice ? Hmmm. Find a cheap copy of AcidPro3 or at least give Vegas a try. Vegas is a great program for all sorts of uses. I wouldn't sell it - especially with DVDA - you may well find it's something you'll grow into in the future. Buying that same power again later with other (less friendly) packages could be mighty expensive.

Thanks both,

Very insightfull info there  I am just torn and on the fence of what to do since I know Vegas is probably a keeper

I won free Vegas 5 + DvD aswell as Soundforge 7 and a motherload of loop librarys for a sony contest.

Was a good one and I totally understand that if I ever sold Vegas and then needed to buy that sort of app again it could be quite expensive.

Ill prob just use Vegas and sell off the SF7 and keep the loops cause ya know ya can never have to many loops hehe.

I just needed basic loop editing and now that N3 can load acid loops and strethc as it should, thats a cool integration.

Cheers!
