Asio,sts, and pci

Hi

As I was searching for an answer to my problem on planetz I saw somebody saying that asio and sts can cause much pci problems.
I have 14 asio outs/14 in(routed to cubase and then back to sfp)and a sts-4000 working together with cubase sx. Is this a 'normal'setup (should this work without errors?) I'm asking this because i get the pci limit message.

edit]I can only load 4 masterverb classics without any other devices.Normal?

Depends how much stuff is loaded and playing within the STS sampler, I guess. I use STS3000 + 32 ASIO channels, and I can load up my project (18 DSPs system,) but the STS is only used for short/small drum hit and other things. I can imagine that heavier/bigger samples and more polyphony could kill your PCI performance, as the samples have to be streamed from the computer's RAM to the card thru the PCI bus, along the ASIO streaming and reverb stuff, so yeah it can probably get fairly clogged pretty fast.

that's pretty low performance for an intel(875?) chipset. what else is connected to the pci bus besides scope?

the mobo is: Asus p4r800v deluxe
It's ati radeon 9100 IGP chipset.
So what else is on my pci bus..

Well, the device mangaer says this:
2x pulsar 2
Radeon 9100 igp
sis 180 raid controller (you mentioned before to turn it off but if i do that he doesn't recognise my harddisk anymore..suggestions?)

I switched from acpi mode to standard mode->got rid of a dsp overload error by doing this( after loading 5 masterverbs classic).
Hyperthreading is off and all onboard things like LAN,onboard audio, usb controllers,1394 are off.

well, that's about as well as that motherboard will do. onboard graphics, sis raid controller, not to good for a daw.

you'll want an agp graphics card and disable the onboard, but you'll also want a better motherboard. if the current level of performance is sufficient, then it's all good, so leave it alone... but if you really want a more powerful machine, an intel or nvidia chipset would be the thing. the motherboard i have been using a lot for my clients is the intel d865perl, cheap and stable. the d875pbz is also a good choice.

Forgot to mention that i disabled the radeon also..
Glad I can swap my mobo for another one.
Altough i find it strange..
If i switch off everything, why doesn't it work? A pci-bus is just like all others or is the chipset from real importance?

yes, the chipset is of vital importance. not all motherboards or pci busses are the same.

I only heard good things about the intel d865perl on planetz so I'm going to change my board for this one.
Could you give me some information about this board?:

Pci placements of the cards (2)
Acpi or standard mode
Ht or not

slots 1,3,4,5 are useful. 1 & 5 share with each other. i turn off ht as the benefits are minor and the potential hassle makes me not want it. i have used acpi and standard mode successfully.

Mmm i can only swap it for an Asus board. Anyone know a fine Asus board wich is excellent to use with 2 (project)cards?

get the one without the extra onboard that you don't absolutely need. an 865 or 875 chipset should work fine(the newer intel chipsets have been reported to work great). $90 is not a lot of money for peace of mind, however, especially since you can always recoup some by selling the old board on ebay.......

give it a shot. it should be just fine. you may want to back up your user files and format. reinstalling everthing from scratch should ensure a stable system.

It's not a deluxe.

I've been thinking about the p4p800 but the p4c800 has the intel 875 chipset instead of a 865.

the basic model doesn't have raid, but yes you can always choose PATA/SATA...
