There was a great BBC 'Horizon' programme about synaesthesiasts (try saying that sober) and there were people who saw music in colours like an aurora borealis and also people who did maths calculations by using the numbers they actually see stretched out in all directions in their field of vision. Mad stuff. i think one person could smell music too.

Wonder if anyone can create random melodies which are mathematically linked to variations in colour & pattern ???

A piece of software that spits out random melodies based on jpegs or animations would be interesting...sure i've seen this...now where?

I don't believe that a song can be melodic using random patterns. We humans are atracted to precise timed rythms that have nothing to do with randomness. IMHO

Let me guess.. these might be the same people the US Government tested LSD on? I had a girlfriend who saw aura-colors and saw music on a daily basis. She also used acid on a daily basis.. Hmm.. coincidence?

No 8-bit, it is actually naturally occurring phenomenon (no drugs involved, honest ). The conclusion was something like we all have it to some degree as an evolutionary/survival thing, it's just that it's more pronounced in these people. And certain 'levels' of synaesthesia may account for geniuses. Or something.

synesthesia.. cool. I just heard from a synesthesic person in my cognitive science class today. The most common occuring synesthesia, and the one most studied, is with colors and numbers. They think this happens because the two parts in the brain that deal with numbers/letters/symbols, and the one of the visual processors that deal with color are in close proximity to each other. The person in my class was a computer science major who saw numbers as colors. I asked her if colors would then be seen as numbers, and she said no.

Researchers think that by studying synesthesia, they can find out how 2 senses can be bound together, to form sensory metaphors.. which happens to be the way we learn many things, and therefore may be key in understanding how humans think in metahpors.

I believe there's still much to be researched in auditory synthesthesia, simply because it's harder to find people who have it.

Oh yeah, it's also known that synesthesia seems to be semi-genetic.. is predominantly female, mosly left handed, have very good memory, and that many synesthesic people have a poor sense of direction. It's also known that synesthesics are born like everyone else physiologically. It's during growth that certain bindings in the brain are broken, and if some specific binding is left intact, you are synesthesic. It is believed that synesthesia occurs around 1 in 200. Synesthesia is involuntary, and consistant throughout the person's lifetime, but may be inconsistent between 2 synesthesic persons.

just another thought.. I have a friend who's a chef, and I've always wanted to do a piece that went along with one of his full dinners. (the full french course) Not really synesthesia, but the dinner would probably be damn good. There's always something about great food that linked to music.. not literal, as in synesthesia, but a common aesthetic, or phylosophy.

I'm sure I'm not the only one around here that's felt this way.

Maybe a bit hard if your idea of good food is just a grill. Or, I mean, a grill is good, but there's obviously more to food than just a grill. Is it just me? I go out for a dinner here in Miami and it's always some sort of grilled food or the other. (okay, that was a mini rant, lol)

Hoi,

Interesting, I hadn't heared of that syndrome before this topic... Sounded familiar tho, acid memories popped up reading it.

There's also some natural trip that you can experience the moments you're falling asleep but are not sleeping yet. I played with these moments as a kid, trying to make them longer and finally made up a small world between dream and reality.
During that trip, senses are mixed up also.
More on these trippy senses, see John's article on it: http://www.planetz.com/Zzz.html .

Hey Ken, thanks for that explanation!
re: music @ table: music is background there, something mellow a la Mc Solaar always does it for me. Not trying to pull attention, just floating on in the background, a bit like muzak but more tasty

Enjoy the weekend,

Did you say evolution? You don't believe in god? I will bomb you. Ok.. not really *hahaha*. This synasthesia shit is nuts, yeh? I wish I could see sound. I rememeber once when I was dilusional due to dehydration, I went into this trance and i heard the most wonderful drum n' bass and I had these very insane visions (its all i could see, really.. I didn't see anything in regards to reality). Strange shit goin on.

Rock,

WHAT EVER! That thing looks cool, but I'll give you one opinion about that product: LAME-O! Dude, their demo's sound like they came from a GS wavetable from a Creative Soundlbaster 16. Yeh.. I"ll buy a product that sounds like dorksville.

"This weeks marketing angle, have crap demos so people will KNOW how our product sounds. Honesty will be our angle."

hilarious. I'm still laughin at how crap those demos were.
