If you always thought you'd like a Pro-One but didn't have the money or couldn't spare the DSP needed to run it, then look at the Z0405.
It's raw and nasty (well most of the time), and while it doesn't have a lot of knobs, the blurb is right: the knobs you do have can dramatically alter the texture of the sound. And they have bite.
One of the things I like best is the LFO - just like the 404 it has speed. You can turn this up so fast you get the roughest cross-modulation-like sound you'll hear this side of an old Korg Mono-Poly.
It has a lot in common with its freeware ancestor, the ZS404, but goes much further. Sure it can do detuned-grinding-vicious, but it can also do smooth-round-sub.
The preset names are a bit poor: things like: cpu, save-as, copyright and backspace - they don't really tell you much. But that's the only downside I can see, which isn't much of a criticism.
With so many synths out there I think this does have something special to offer - it's not just a 303 clone. It gets textures that little bass machines will never match. Think Pro-One and MonoPoly and you're getting close.
If you need a hard edge then $30 here is good value.
