I recently read that some managers would actually kill if they were able to arise only a part of the loyality and brand-awareness of Apple customers on their own target group

give up, Startdust - they already got you, ...making a difference between a notebook and an iBook

cheers, Tom

Japanese people call it "locking in", and it's standard marketing I think. A really great one. Sony does it all the time with their crappy proprietory technology. Sonys are built to work with Sonys and nothing else. Remember they used to have their own version of ieee connectors?

The whole Mac phenomenon is a combination of this locking in business and also image branding. And boy do they have a great team doing it. It's something that takes a lot of thought to pull off, and apple's doing it right. It's all great marketing.

On the other hand though, since I actually use a Powerbook.. not that I'm a Mac phreak, but after going through 3 PC notebooks, I'd say PowerBooks are built pretty well.

Yet competition is good. We know that it is possible that a new OS might replace both Mac and Microsoft. Hopefully it will be open source.

I REALLY liked that quote from a local company exporting furnitures to far east '... in Japan a customer isn't king (as it's named here), but a ... god

I remember when AOL wouldn't let their own customers connect to the internet. They wanted to compete with the internet. It was a stupid mistake which was fostered by greed. There was a time when Apple could have gone up against Microsoft by offering their OS for the PC, but they foolishly decided not to. Proprietary systems are a really bad idea.

Apple once allowed 3rd party mac clones to use mac OS...it was a mistake, as the often bad results due to bad hardware reflected negatively back to Apple

Like the Newton and the Lisa, there were many so called mistakes and backtracks. The firing of Steve Jobs could have been considered nothing but a high tech lynching of an uppity founder. Who would have thought that he would be back as CEO? Currently we are in the ipod/imusic stage. A good idea or a trendy fashion statement? So now they are a music distribution company rather than a computer company. This all seems like Apple has no clear direction. I'm waiting for the Apple blender for my kitchen. Maybe I can make some good Apple juice with it.
