I think we should have a section called "Hurricanes"...
Here we go again, the strongest hurricane ever recorded, hurricane Wilma.

[sarcasm] I assure you this is normal and it won't happen again. [/sarcasm]

Mister Mayfield (director of the Hurricane Center) says it's this big:

Is the US a hurricane magnet ? Seems to be carefully steering it's way to Florida...

I was thinking about the same thing. The explanation for this I think it is related to the season in which this hurricane is happening. This time of year the jetstream dips lower in the US continent so it has a chance to push the hurricane earlier to the east. Remember Katrina, once it got into the continent it started drifting eastwards. Rita did the same. They all do, it depends only how deep the jetstream is located.

heh, and I was supposed to be assisting a scuba diving class this sunday at key largo.. It's gonna suck again for us down in Miami because the power lines are so unorganized, the power goes out, and stays out for quite a while. I'd expect 3-4 days without power, but certainly hope for less.

I hope all goes well for the keys tho.. they'll probably be slammed pretty hard.. There are lots of ship owners down there, and they better be insured down to the tiniest bolt on the ship.

Hurricanes mess up the ocean bottom pretty good, and also freaks out the sea critters.. so it's no good diving for a week or so after the hurricane, which is a bummer.

damn the global warming. Someone needs to get with the show. The earth is warming, and it really really sucks.

Hurricane W is headed straight for Texas. Bet me on this.

This is further proof that god is a woman.

na, only place that I've dove other than FL was in Maldives, when I got certified. I've been thinking of doing Palau because I have relatives in Taiwan, which is pretty close to Palau. Other than music, I think diving rocks. It keeps me away from the computer, and close to nature, where everyone should be. But hell, we all love internet don't we? lol

Too late for me and the maldives ...I wish
But Palau is great ,lots of drift diving along the walls(very deep walls)bronze whalers, white tips on the sand ,barracudas in a cartwheel formation rolling along the wall, red sea fans 8' tall, angel fish as big as ones head .Blue hole is insane and blue corner is too once you beat the current ,got well and truly narked there ,lol, palau vegetables.Oh and jellyfish lake is a must for a snorkel, if you dig the idea of getting into the lake down an alligator slide ,a freaking fresh alligator slide .
I guess Truk is culturally difficult ,it's a shame really because the ships have become very very beautiful... but no fish at all ..dynamite fishing maybe..
If we did it again we would DEFINITELY include Yap for the mantas and if you ever do it try and include the grotto in Saipan ,two or three exits to the sea about 80' down ..big turtles and a very exciting exit from the dive ..you have to time a belly flop onto a flat rock with the swell  finally a benefit from a youth wasted in the surf
Cheers

Just got power back after 3 days of power outage.. that's about how long we lost power during Katrina. We got hit when Wilma was changing from a cat 3 to a cat 2 I think, and we weren't directly under Wilma, so the damage was just a little stronger than Katrina.. But some had it bad in other areas of South FL, like some had roofs get blown off and stuff.

Other than not being able to get gas for the time being, I think people are enjoying a week off from daily business.. I see people gathering with relatives, barbequeing (only way to get hot food) and kids playing catch because their playstations won't work. I also see people rollerblading, jogging.. I'm beginning to think not having electricity actually enriches people's lives... lol

But anyway, we're lucky our houses didn't get blown away and that's probably why people can still laugh about it over a barbeque.

The only problem right now is that lots of people need gas.. and since power just came back on, it should be a matter of time 'till the the gas stations get electricity to operate their pumps.
