asus p5p800se system noise

Hi there
After looking round the panet Z forums I bought the asus p5p800se as it seemed to be a safe choice. However I'm having a problem with noise generated by hard drive activity, mouse movements/graphics and also some underlying cpu fan noise on the audio outputs of my pulsar 2.
System is as follows
asus p5p800se
pulsar 2 in pci slot 4...The card won't fit in either slot 3 or 1 as the board is badly designed with stuff in the way!
pentium 4 d 930 3.0gig dual core
pata seagate barracuda HD
pc2100 ram 2x 512mb
matrox millenium g450 4x agp graphics card.
windows xp sp2
sfp 3.1c....can't seem to get 4 to install.
Basically as soon as the pc boots I get system noise on the audio outputs of the pulsar. If anyone has any ideas at all I'd be very grateful to hear them. I'm stumped!
cheers

thanks for the help
The pulsar cables are fine...I've had the board for years. It might be an idea to get anothyer pci soundcard to try to see if it's related to the pulsar or the board as a whole.
I don't think the mother board screws are causing any problems. The cpu heat sink did have to have a back plate attatched to the back of the mb so I suppose this could be the problem but I would have thought it would just blow the board if it were touching somewhere it shouldn't. Maybe I'll try loosening it a bit.
Are there any known issues with the 24pin motherboard power supply's or running the cpu at a slower fsb speed due to the slower memory I'm using?

you should never think, but at best consider in those cases...On 2006-03-29 01:02, jonboyblue wrote:

it can be anything from a weak (or not properly working) power supply to messed up interupts and in fact the connection between mobo-case-card-backplate is very(!) important.
The ground wires of the Pulsar's external connector are are all on so-called frame ground, the outer shield of the plug, which is supposed to be tightly connected to the computer case.
if this connection fails (as has been reported with certain color coatings on metal parts) you may get electrically interesting variations.
in my understanding the mobo HAS to be connected to the case ground (by it's screws)
ground issues (which may not be obvious in the first place) are among the most strange problems one can imagine, sometimes almost black magic.

just been investigating further
The noise is present even if I quit/close sfp.
the noise is present even if I disconnect the monitor (screen).
The power cable for the pc is not near the pulsar cables.
The interference is local to the pulsar channels on the mixer. It is present on both monitors and h-phones
When I shut down, the pc gives a couple of clicks and a pheeeooowww sound as the fans stop.
I tried booting the pc without the graphics card in. There was no noise however I don't think windows was actually booted up. difficult to tell without any screen.
The noise must come from inside the pc

yes, this is the infamous 'farting donkey sound' - according to SandroB, who named it a couple of years agoOn 2006-03-29 02:15, jonboyblue wrote:

whatever sound you hear before SFP is completely loaded as well as after you confirmed the last SFP shutdown dialog is absolutely meaningless.
It is an arbitrary result of various random register contents and unstabilized voltages.
Btw the same method is frequently applied in circuit bending Casio and similiar 'crappy' stuff to get surprising (and funny ?) results.
It's mentioned in the SFP manual with an explicite warning TO NEVER have the monitors on in this situation. The instable digital sync can easily cost you a membrane.
anyway, there's the possibility of electrical interference from the videocard (or any of it's lines) if the system seems quiet without one installed.
As you've mentioned it's not easy to decide without visual feedback - but it could also be an interupt conflict between the video card and Scope.
Conflict doesn't mean it has to completely breakdown or bluescreen.
It could just prevent attention the Scope card needs in a certain moment.
I had that myself once and blamed it to a weak powersupply (with 80 Watt printed on the specs you just have to assume this...), but the same PSU worked perfectly and the noise was gone after a Windows re-install (Win98).
I wouldn't suggest to re-install in your case as that's usually not the most pleasant operation - and you might even end with Windows just assigning the same values as before.
But you could try to modify the system's graphic parameters (or something in your bios - if there is a possibility) just to see if this modifies the noise.
If it reacts to your actions, then it's more likely software related than hardware electrical noise.
You might try another video card (whatever is available) just to verify the source of the problem.
good luck, Tom
Hi
I´ve got the same Problem.
I´ve got this noise (when moving the mouse or the Screen is changing) on creamware Card.
And on my onboard Soundcard (if scopecards are disabled)
Because of this noise and my PCI bus problem (solved) i´ve bought a new Mobo.
The same...
So i think it could be the grafic card.
I´ve got a Leadtek Winfast 400 TDH --- Geforce 6800 (without le or gt)
I´ve removed the I/O Plate from scope but cant say anything for now.
I will report tomorrow.
It sounds like a "massefehler" dont know the english word.

Oh i´ve got a geforce 4200... tomorrow i will try it out too.

If it is the same for me what could i do?
Modify the power suply or what?
I dont think its manufactured as it is.
Noone wants a Powersuply with noise.
Its not only on creamwarecards.
I´ve the same Problem with onboardsoundcard.
