is this motherboard good for 3 scope cards?

PC Configurations, motherboards, etc, etc

thanx garyb. i'm only afraid of buying a motherboard with only 3pci slots, i'm mostly shure i'll get irq conflicts with my 3 creamware cards... and i have no option to change the slot when all slots are used...

cheers

yeah, you'll do some disabling with a three slot mobo. actually, even with the 5 slot d865perl i disable a usb controller or two, but there are four usb controllers on that board so it doesn't matter....

ok, garyb. when you say that i wont get irq conflicts with a 3 slot mobo and disabling some usb, i'll trust you and go for this, as you have lot of exp in building daw's...

at the moment i'm using a dell dimension 5000 with only 2 pci slots, hehe, and i had to break the harddisk cage to get the scope board fit in  otherwise i don't regret the buy, as it works like a charm for 900$ with a scope pro and a pulsar II.

Ok, with the dimension 5000 i couldn't prevent a irq conflict between one of the two creamware cards and the graphic card (ati x300 with dualscreen enabled). but who cares if it works at last...

cheers
Roman

you may end up with a system process sharing an irq which shouldn't make a problem.

personally, if absolute maximum native performance(lots of vsts)isn't of prime importance, i'd get the d865perl and save lots of money.

maximum native performance is not needed, as i use cubase only for tracking... ok, now i have to check if this mobo fit in my dell chassis  thanx again garyb!

now i know what nativ mix meens thnk to garyB;
here in vienna (in hole austria) d865perl you only get second hand and i think please corect me garyB its not prescott ready so you are in the second hand cpu market too.
build a new with second hand????
i dont use vsts; cubase is only a midisequenzer if i need one. i record in vdat; have i said that i love my vdat .
to andreD : 25ms latency ?? reminds me of my pulsar1 in a p2bls with a 400MHz cpu Pentium2 512MB ram and scsi drives but i cant belive that your talking of the board named in this topic and i use today.
but i respect your knowledge and so wonder what killermix that was ?
normaly i record 16-24 audiochannels dont care about the latency; post prod. goes out to Fostex dat; but in two weeks i have a live MIX/recording will go up to 32 channels and latency is important course its also a livemix
i will report if youre still interrested
good vibes from vienna

AGP bus activity does not affect PCI bus performance at all. AGP DOES not use any of PCI bus routing. AGP is third (first-CPU;second-PCI) port to main memory. Also AGP 8x intake peak bandwith -2GB/s PCI-133MB/s

On most PCI-e motherbooard PCI bus realized as PCI-E device. In this case all PCI devices are shared (indirectly)PCI-e bus traffic including that main from graphic card. Seems this may cause additional arbitrary delays (PCI-PCI-E-Memory)on poor optimized PCI-e chipset which could affect PCI bus perfomance. May be this is reason why current generation of Scope boards shows bad performance on some nforce4 boards. For better PCI performance on PCI-e motherboards needed proper BIOS upgrade(if it exist) or at least Scope driver update(which is not exist).

I have used the D865PERL for 1 year now 4 live performance, which is unforgiving if you have stability issues and such. I have had no such issues. I use 3 x Scope cards, and a Matrox G450 32mb 8xAGP card. I use Gigastudio 3 Orchestra wuth the CW GVSIF 1.0 drivers w/o conflicts. This is a typical, low cost no frills mobo which was thoroughly tested by Intel w/ Intel chipsets, therin lies the sucsess. Quality control and R&D budget 4 Intel allows them to test their CPU/chipset combos in house. One only needs to look at the NF4 which was an early released product which still has bugs in it. AMD/NF3 has no such issues 4 that combo was tested before the PCI-e standards came into play. NVidia was in a hurry to compete with Intel and the whole SLI protocol. Hell they released their own Intel based chipset early too. So I always do my homework when it comes to buggy hardware combos. Seems to me that Intel has the money to test products more efficiently before they release them to public. That is why I bought the D865PERL. Sure it doesn't cost much, but I have a rather large investment with DSP's because of their cheap, stable products. BTW I am using better HDD's and RAM also. Kingston ECC 2GB, and 3 x Raptors in a SATA RAID cage. Playing live is a breeze thanks to this stable, slow rig.

I can confirm similiar experiences from Macs clocked at (low) rates that people almost wouldn't believe it.
Considering the overall performance of the department, i.e. when the job is eventually DONE they outperformed every Wintel 'solution'

SFP and it's hardware base have often been called slow and outdated as well - but they actually DO WORK very effectively.

a stupid example ?
I recently stumbled across a paragraph in the description of a 1-in/4-out combined guitar di-splitter, mentioning to connect one output permanently to a tuner (in an example config).
That reminded me at the annoyance of the tuning procedure, the unplug, re-plug etc.

my A16 has lots of spare outputs - so now the guitar input channel is also routed to one of them that's connected to a tuner - dunno why this didn't enter my mind earlier

...not to mention that I could use a couple of stomp boxes for other sources as well by simply making them switchable in the routing window...
have the idea, plugin a few cables, draw some screen connections - ENJOY (or forget if it wasn't worth)
but nothing is as effective and flexible as SFP - for me it will never become obsolete

cheers, Tom

I Second That Emotion,
SFP has made me a routing fanatic. I am routing my Line 6 Echo Pro Looper into SFP and can play my whole mix in reverse instead of just the solo or vocal pads from Giga. It's got to be so bad that I now look at everything and want to re-route it, literally. I even emptied my windshield washer container in my work truck, and refilled it with Jaegermeister so I could re-route my windshield washer tube through my ashtray and have a more rewarding drive home. I simply push the windsheild washer button, and put my shotglass in the ashtray, and viola, out comes a finely re-routed product. Since I never use my wipers, 4 there is no rain in Las Vegas, my vehicle is now more ergonomically suited. The only downfall is that eveybody follows me outside on our breaks.

To Us, And Those Like Us,

Check out the article on chipsets at xbitlabs. It says that the current chipsets are slower in comparison to the i865PE. The best P4 configuration 4 Scope sure looks like the D856PERL with a Prescott/Northwwod CPU. But as I stated, the most stable set-up that I 've seen with Scope is theD865PERL. As the Pevtium M box is great 4 recording due to it's speed and silence, but it has caused my friend lost time during session work before, and my Supermicro P4SCT+II, on paper a phenominal motherboard used the server chipset from Intel ( ICH6R ) which was finicky about the GSIF 1.0 drivers from CW. The tested and true mobo to use 3 x Scope cards is the D865PERL IMHO.

I have found the 3 x card combo that I am going to have GaryB build 4 me.

Servercase CK480 4U ATX
OCZ Powerstream ADJ-520
Plextor DVD RW
Corsair 2048 3500LLPRO DDR2
Matrox 128MB PCI-e P650
3Ware SATA RAID cage
2 x Raptor X's ( Audio HDD's )
1 x Raptor WD360G ( O.S. + Apps. )
Intel D955XCS
Intel D950
3 x Scope Pro.'s 45 DSP's ( Fuckin' A )
RME HDSP 96/32
EnergyXT VST Host
Top Secret VSTi DSP based Synth

This is a 4 PCI / 16x PCI-e motherboard.
GaryB is a trained professional at IRQ's, etc.
I have faith in this combo, and in SFP.
The D950 is 350 USD at this time, but my sources tell me that will be dropped by 75 - 100 USD when Conroe/Dell PC's hit the market in August. I am ready and waiting. As this CPU is dual core/64bit, I will be able to upgrade to Conroe in 2007 when they drop to realistic pricing. Conroe is a very good CPU IMHO, according to all reviews. So this should be a good DAW 4 years to come. This dog will hunt. What say you GaryB?

In preparation of a crash with the host, the SFP will not have to be rebooted, and a hardware sequencer would carry on until performance is over, then re boot the God damn VST, since SFP never crashes,...ever!

Just for information :
I have (too) many problems with asus p5w2d on winXP & cubase sx3 when working hard on LOOPS or with STS.
