Power supply vs UPS

Post by firubbi »

i bought a 750 Power supply and will run :

2 HD (300gb ecah)
1 DVDRW
2 Pulsar(maybe 3) cards
1 pcix vga

problem is i got APC UPS which is 1000va(600w) only. i don't know is it ok to run a 750w power supply with 600w ups?

thanks.

That 750w power supply is probably peak power and not RMS. Anyway you probably aren't drawing anywhere near that so the APC UPS should be fine. I'm guessing the UPS will warn you anyway of any overload condition.

Correct, your PSU will only draw according to the load you put on it (plus its thermal loss) and so that is what the UPS will see. Also it's worth noting that there's a difference between APC's "BackUPS" and "SmartUPS" products. The former is only offering a battery backup and the same thermal breakers you'll find on a power strip. The SmartUPS does at least some level of line level regulation (compensating for power dips & spikes that are long term and not simple transients). It's still not giving you clean sine-wave filtered power though, for that you pay quite a bit more...
