Hancock meets scope

I came across a live CD with Herbie Hancock and his VSOP orchestra recorded live at the Newport festlval in 76. I really like his modal jazz tunes such ans Cantilope island and Maiden Voyage. My idea was to try to recreate the groove and attitude of Maiden Voyage only using Scope and Cubase. I ran my Yamaha S80 Rhodes through Interpole and used the Minimax to present the theme. The STS 4000 is used for drum samples and the Individual out function allow the snare drum to be processed by adding delay.

Hope you reckognise the tune!

I know you gotta' be giggin' somewhere. Nice chops, and the groove was nailed to the wall. Awesome.

None of this hit and run shit.

You have given me confidence to post some jazz w/ synths now. I was trying to learn all of this DnB, PsyTrance, etc. I would rather play it myself using synths and EP's, or even an all synth rendition.

Thank you for your comments Jimmy and thank you for your inspiring postings recently in the music department!

I also find it important not to forget that, to me at least, I am better at playing the keyboard than programming music on Reason, Fruity Loops, Cubase etc. if such a comparison is valid.

My progress on computer music has been minimal since I purchased my Luna II in 2002 - but my hardware / software collection has grown out of proportions! (NOAH EX, Pulsar II, Pulsar I, Luna II, E-mu 6400 Ultra, E-mu Esi-4000, Yamaha An1x; Yamaha KX5, Yamaha S80, Yamaha Cs1x, Fender Rhodes Seventythree ...)

So, I hope to be able to present more jazz stuff created on my Scope platform which at its best may resemble a "real" jazz performance.

Zangsta, I am glad you liked it.

The drum part is made using the drum roll pattern in Cubase sent to STS4000 which has loaded a preset drum kit from an old AKAI Bob Clearmountain II drum sample cd.

There are no more than 2 different bars which is repeated again and again During the middle section, in between the Minimax sections, I have selected the Zone of only the snare drum to go to individual out no. 1 of the STS 4000. I have inserted a tempo based delay in the mixer channel of the snare drum in an attempt to emulate a more "free" / "live" left hand of the imaginary drummer.
