USB Hub Possibly?

Post by dawman »

I have been doing several tweaks to allow Gigastudio 4 and Scope to work with only a single Scope MIDI A Source & Destination. Success is at hand. But it appears that certain little problems arise and have to be dealt with.

First off it seems as though the Dongle must remain on the same USB Port, of course there is no more mention of this anywhere, and also having the current version of the LCC can erase the eLicenses. That was fun.... :x

I thought my 1U QWERTY KVM Drawer's trackball went bad, so I went and spent 20 USD on a new pair of USB connected KB & Mouse. I have come to learn that I have too many USB ports being used. This was evident when I disconnected the 2 x KS88's and external DVD & Dongle. Everything worked fine, but when I started adding USB Flash Media, and the DVD, only the right side of USB QWERTY ( new 15 dollar version ), would function. No typing was allowed ??

My Device Manager shows the choices of ports that have been disabled, and since GaryB's builds never, ever crash, I shall not change any settings, as they are directly related to IRQ sharing solutions. 2 of these " disabled " ports actually still have enough power to juice up the LCD's on my KS88's.

Using many ports seems to cause problems with USB QWERTY devices. These peripherals should have little drain on the bandwidth, but using so many ports simultaneously seems to be a problem. Thankfully my KS88's are not subject to this as they use the power only, and MIDI for performing and controlling MIDI CC's.

Would a single port solution w/ a hub help anything? I know that audio snakes and MIDI can use relays to extend their lengths at big shows, and maybe a USB hub might have some sort of regulator / booster onboard?

Anyone having USB troubles like this?

Starry......

What's a good quality hub that I can drag around w/o worrying about cracking the cheap ass plastic housing it is surely going to be built with?

The DP35DP made me leary when I saw no PS/2 I.O's. But I dealt w/ it, but I really need to be able to put everything into the 2 ports that work. The dongle for some reason MUST use the port it is attached to or the eLicenses do not show up, even though the QWERTY or KS88's can use it.

Maybe these USB ports are drifting into that suspend mode or something. Never had these troubles before. It just seems like there is a lack of bandwidth or something.

Any Certain Model?

Thanks,

Found what I needed.

I was reading about how a 4-Port hub never can refresh itself if it's self powered. Models w/ external power keep the pipes clean and are refreshed constantly.

I knew there would be drawbacks with all of this " no power needed " crap.

I have 6 USB ports and they are choking, simple as that. This better help or I'll get a cheap Imtel w/ PS/2's.

on one machine (the non scope one) i use a usb2 card on one of the mostly useless PCIe slots for things which need speed (esp the virus TI an extra usb MIDI on behringer bcf) instead of all those USB things hogging up all kinds of IRQs they end up on the one slot and work nice and fast. finally i can use virus TI in USB mode and it stays in sync.

it may or may not help, maybe more than a hub.

i use a hub for all the slow or things like keyboard, mouse, vg-99 editor etc.

if you get a hub get a powered one that uses its own supply, and dont get one of those cheapo ebay ones for $0.99 :D

btw my computer at work which is a super duper dell p690 with dual quad xeons and 8gb RAM has problems powering some USB things like my ipod and phone it keeps disconnecting and reconnecting on certain ports. powered hub fixed it right up.

ebay was sweet. 9.49 USD w/ free shipping.

Comes w/ power too. :D

Maybe my 1U drawer will start working again. My boy gets the Prodyssey a KS88 + LCD w/ SKB and the drawer. I really hope he keeps up his enthusiasm and his grades.

I explained how nice it is to have money for nothin' and the chicks for free.

His teachers always ask me to play for the class at certain functions. Talk about a tough room.

There are 300 +....................................supply and demand. Plus the sellers try to bump up the shipping price w/ insutance, etc.

But I took the free shipping.

10 bucks.............it's worth a try.

Now I am really freaked out.

Until my port arrives I have to unplug the QWERTY, plug in the dongle, etc.

I found out that Cubase 4 and GVI work w/o the dongle once it see's the eLicense using Syncrosoft's LCC Version that resides on the Gigastudio 4 installation DVD #1?

I have to install it to load another app. But I can actually wear this around my neck and use GS4/GVI/+ VSTi's then disconnect. Maybe the new LCC from Syncrosoft has corrected this as there are no new features that seem imperative.

To save the project though it has to be plugged back in.

The more I play, the more I learn.

brought to you by wiki-common knowledge repeated and wild lies concocted via the internets courtesy of Wales&Sanger since 2000...

sorry stardust, it always seems my humor is pointed at you, but it's really just a problem in my head, where the brain makes unlikely and wild connections and then thinks itself funny. your post was just a catalyst...
