I need a simple sample player for Win XP
I need a simple sample player for Win XP
Hello,
A friend mailed me a couple of days ago about a Christmas play he is working on. They need to play back samples that are linked to the white keys (because of labeling) on a MIDI keyboard. So C4 would be one sample and D4 another etc. Is there a freeware or shareware program that can load a bunch of WAV files and map them to different keys? Thanks!
Leon

Re: I need a simple sample player for Win XP
Thanks, but I need something outside the Scope environment.
Re: I need a simple sample player for Win XP
Looking at energyXT right now...
Re: I need a simple sample player for Win XP
Nope. energyXT is not easy to set up.
Re: I need a simple sample player for Win XP
I did find something, but it won't respond to MIDI input.

Re: I need a simple sample player for Win XP
I'd recommend that for a xmas play, a hardware sampler such as an Akai or Emu would be the best option. Obviously, if the samples they want to trigger are very long then the memory capacity of a hardware sampler might be an issue, but if the samples aren't toooo long it would be the most reliable option & they wouldn't need to rely on a computer at all. Just set up some sample patches & trigger them via the midi keyboard... job done. 2nd hand samplers are very cheap & should be easy to find in Holland, but If they can't afford to buy one maybe they could borrow one for a couple of weeks...
Anything from any of the Akai S3000, S5000 or S6000 series
or...
Anything from any of the Emu ESI 4000, E6400, E series Ultras (5000, 6400 or Emulator IV)
or
Any of the Yamaha A series samplers.
or
Any of the Roland S series samplers (these can be limited in memory, but have a great sounding filter)

Looks simple enough. Except it keeps crashing when I try to load a sample or change a setting.ReD_MuZe wrote:http://www.vemberaudio.se/shortcircuit.php

Re: I need a simple sample player for Win XP
Well I own a A3000v2 myself but it takes a huge amount of time to load the amount of samples they need. And the budget in this church is, well, not much. Re: I need a simple sample player for Win XP
ah thats fixable then
first of all you can try changing settings and presets within the plugin itself,
and second, you can try one of the following hosts if that doesn't work:

Re: I need a simple sample player for Win XP
Use a free host like Savihost and this plugin:
http://www.vemberaudio.se/shortcircuit.php
v1.1.x is very easy to use and stable.
edit - somehow I missed Red's post

Re: I need a simple sample player for Win XP
I wonder how well shortcircuit would perform on a P3 with only 512mb ram?? Might give it a go...
Re: I need a simple sample player for Win XP
Shroomz - in theory it should be reasonable but I don't think you'll get a huge amount of voices when pitching stuff around. The resampling engine is very high quality and you would probably start to notice the CPU hit on a P3. The filters will also likely start chewing the CPU quite a bit if used on multiple voices. Apart from that though, the GUI and other stuff certainly won't ask much of a P3 box.
Re: I need a simple sample player for Win XP
Thanks Dark, I'll give it a go.. Just need a free VST host with good midi sequencer for the P3 box, as I'm not paying for Cubase again & want to be able to run this standalone for track sketching while someone else is using the main DAW.
Re: I need a simple sample player for Win XP
Thanks for the link Red! .. unfortunately it requires a min 800mHz CPU & the P3 here only has a 733, but I'll give it a go. 200mb HD space for the install is a big hit on this particular P3 though..
Re: I need a simple sample player for Win XP
if you have a p3 why not install a linux system? (Debian/ubuntu)
you will have plenty of free tools to choose from most of which are very lightweight, and you will be able to run a light shell like blackbox with no probs on that p3.
there are enough samplers synths andplugins, there is a pretty nifty daw (ardour), and many midi sequencers(rosegarden and more...)
its worth giving it a go on such an old pc

Re: I need a simple sample player for Win XP
Good point mate, but it's running Scope 4 on 6 dsps, so linux isn't a real option.
