completely reharmonized the disco tune for house version

Post by kensuguro »

New chords everywhere. We changed directions and are now heading for a more sophisticated house tune rather than a straight up disco. (who needs more disco?) This one is a check for the new chords. Synth keys and bass in there just to demonstrate the chords.. the bass is still disco-ish since I'm playing it finger bass style.. The pads I'm taking out for sure once I arrange all the parts.. I'm not sure if I change the bass much since moving around in such a chord progression naturally seems to end up sounding overly funky and borderline fusion.

The original disco arrangement for comparison:

I definitely like the new chords better. Especially for the main chorus since the new progression puts the melody line in more efficient places relative the chord root. But I may have overshot on the complexity department.

Hi Ken! :)

I find the second link, the one you call original disco arrangement more musical that the second one, but in the other hand, the groove is stronger and more attractive in the first link.

What is it exactly that I find better in the second one? I find better the chords, to a certain extent. I know that you like better the chords in the new version, I too like it better (it sounds like a contradiction), I like them better as long as you fix some harmonic collisions you have between the parts: melody, bass and chords, I’m referring to “very short transitions instances” where some bizarre chords are created for a split of a second, but enough for a dissonance to appear that does not fit the rest of the song. Perhaps this dissonant chords could sound great by themselves, but not in this context, trusting my ear, as I am not talking about harmony in a traditional or academic way.

In general, the chosen instruments and sounds, probably also the effects and the mix, sounds better to me in the new rebuild song.

All in all, I think you are really heading to a VERY beautiful style of yours, I don’t know if you will agree, but composing and composing and composing, you are finding yourself there and your own “personal vive” is coming up, and let me tell you that it is great.

For me, this song is totally worth the effort of perfecting it until you get a perfect song.

Yea, I forgot to tell you, I think it could be very useful for you to find a good singer there in NY, replacing your synth melodies for it, that would give you extra information about your endeavors. If there is someone willing to experiment that would help a lot.

yes, this one is pretty high on the disharmony scale. And you're right, some parts don't even match the melody. It sounds like we're going to go with the disco version, but I guess this was a good practice for reharmonizing and also keeping a broad perspective on the chord / melody relationship.
