Zarg's Ambient and Rotor48 are very good for pads/ambient doodling but are heavy on your DSP (and wallet). I've only tried the demos as I've splashed out on a Scope SRB and have no money left for synths, but the Ambient is the next big purchase I intend making.

layer one: a Wavestation sample
layer two: one of the above
add layers as needed, but don't take it too far, stop before it changes to white noise.

Yep , the Rotor48 is the thing. Sound quality and flexibility of the Rotor48 is superb!
Btw, just got my Minimax, love what I saw until now and managed to make some decent pads with it as well. But Rotor Rules!
