today got a phone call about a second case of theft within one month where an agency has been completely robbed out of all their computers.
Seems to be a specialized gang on high end gear in publishing, so studio equipment might apply as well. One case was in inner city from third floor, so definetely no beginners.
They seem to systematically check out locations. Better take care and have an extra backup of your future hit.

cheers, Tom

you're right Nestor, it's not even the machines but the work stored on them.
Everybody knows how easy a backup gets forgotten under pressure, not to mention a second set put at a different location.
Contract penalties for passed deadlines are common practise in that business.
These guys know exactly what they are doing, I'd consider them extremely dangerous.
Now I got the job  to secure all the stuff of the company I'm working for asap.
Never thought I'd need those metal brackets in the Macs where a chain can be fixed

tnx for your sympathy, Tom

Just one thought: Shouldn´t it be easy to get those thieves?
All CW-boards have a serialnumber, and you need it to register anything. If anyone tries to update anything, or wants to get a new device registered, CW could get them. If they work together with their users, and i think they´ll do that for us.
So Tom, please post those S/N numbers, so that anyone can check it, in case someone shows up and wants to sell a board for a bargain price. Perhaps anyone here can get them.
Good luck!

I think he meant that they stole publishing equipment and not necessarily Creamware or audio gear per se. So tracing Creamware board numbers isn't going to work. Still, if it is specialized equipment, they might be able to find someone selling it. Hopefully they wrote down some serial numbers.

Renter's insurance is always a good idea to get. If you get it, take a couple pictures of your studio and write down serial numbers and you have at least some protection from losing the money invested in audio equipment. Of course, it doesn't help you get back a masterpiece you happened to have been working on...

Even if nothing gets stolen, you could still have a hard-drive crash or natural disaster, so it's always good to backup to external media (even though it's a pain in the ass). CD burners are pretty cheap, and DVD burners are coming down in price now too, the hard part is just remembering (and motivating) to backup regularly.

I've posted this because it's completely ridiculous if you check risk against what you may get for the stolen equipment.
I never thought anyone would be wiered enough to try it.
But obviously those people do it systematically, and that's a different story.
You won't find anything back again, that's a well organized action.
Shawn is right: it's related to publishing gear, so mostly Apple - but any high end stuff might apply.
And keep in mind that in our business and in publishing, night shifts are common and the transportation of gear as well.

cheers, Tom
