help troubleshooting the Luna2496 please?
hi, i was really dumb, now its broken.
it started with a blue screen, win7. i was in the middle of watching a movie, and because the sound was still going ok, i didnt reset the pc right away,
after a while, a pling sound, and silence eversince, on all 8 outs.. the inputs seem to work according to the mixer, stm1632.
there is also not the typical plopp sound when starting the scope software and initializing.
how can i figure out whether the problem is in the box or on the pci card, a pulsar 15 dsp.
i havent opened it yet but will soon, after tomorrow.
is any schematics floating around, do the ins and outs have separate power regulators, can the D/A converter from a Luna 3dsp card be used?
i do have some fancy soldering equipment available at work, not a problem.
thanks for any information.
wish you all a merry christmas

Where are you located?
Re: help troubleshooting the Luna2496 please?
Potentially useful, we have a stateside (US) repair center already for the community, but as of yet no schematics. I need to touch base with that party, will respond when I have more information.
Re: help troubleshooting the Luna2496 please?
Yes, you can assign the Luna‘s analog outputs to the main mixer outs.
That box is probably an AD/DA converter connected via Adat - most likely the PSU of that unit failed.

Re: help troubleshooting the Luna2496 please?
thanks i`ll look into it myself first, or maybe somebody else can chime in
Re: help troubleshooting the Luna2496 please?
it doesnt come with a psu
Re: help troubleshooting the Luna2496 please?
my question was: can i solder the D/A IC from a Luna into the 2496, i read somewhere the D/As are all the same in the whole creamware range. i?d be willing to sacrifice a Luna for that.

Re: help troubleshooting the Luna2496 please?
I did't really understand some details of the problem:
You have a 15DSP scope connected to a Luna I/O-Box with a Zlink ?
You can check your inputs of the Luna I/O box by VU-meters and they work ?
Do you get sound directly on the audio-outputs of your scopecard ?
You could also add a 3DSP card to your 15DSP card and use the outputs of the 3DSP card, but you cannot "transfer the D/A-electronics" between them. ( this only works between 6DSP and 14/15 DSP cards)
((( this means exchanging the piggy module, not transfering on IC level)))

Soldering a single chip will work, if the type is the same or 100% compatible.panaman wrote: Thu Dec 23, 2021 12:36 pm my question was: can i solder the D/A IC from a Luna into the 2496, i read somewhere the D/As are all the same in the whole creamware range. i?d be willing to sacrifice a Luna for that.
Nevertheless a old chip might suffer damage when beeing de-soldered. In some companies, pcbs for desoldering are put under H2O-free athmosphere for some time, as the chip might become cracked when beeing heated up.

Re: help troubleshooting the Luna2496 please?
yeah well, cant use the Luna, the key is faded, unreadable. it wont give me 8 ins and outs either
Re: help troubleshooting the Luna2496 please?
the pcbs are put into an oven because they will blister if containing moisture. not the chips.
Re: help troubleshooting the Luna2496 please?
thats for portable devices, outdoor use, like smartphone pcbs, i live in a rather dry environment

I don't own a Luna I/O-box, so you'll have to find out the D/A chip on your own. I'm really curious if it's the same chip. ( I own A8,A16,A16 ultra and pci cards. They seem to work with different concepts of internal voltages, so I slightly doubt, all chips are the same over generations..)
In a normal living environment, you have humidity of 50% at 20°C. Due to diffusion, some H2O gets inside the chip packaging. Heating the chip up to 300°C will cause micro cracks due to steam. In an professional environment, the chips are keeps some time in a N2 atmosphere to avoid this. If you're desoldering pin by pin, this might not be a point to consider.

Even if the Luna 2496 box draws power over a cable, some fault in internal power regulation is 10times as likely than a converter fail.
Measure voltage at ZLink output first, then inside the Luna box.

Re: help troubleshooting the Luna2496 please?
Yes you can. I wrote about converters here:panaman wrote: Thu Dec 23, 2021 12:36 pm my question was: can i solder the D/A IC from a Luna into the 2496, i read somewhere the D/As are all the same in the whole creamware range. i?d be willing to sacrifice a Luna for that.

Luna box has 4 pieces of this.
But I doubt it's codec. This four 2-channel AD/DA codecs in Luna box are independent, and if there would be a problem with one of it, the other 3 will work fine (six other outputs or inputs).
Re: help troubleshooting the Luna2496 please?
Can you make detailed photos inside of the Luna box, please?
Re: help troubleshooting the Luna2496 please?
thank you all for your contributions.
today after opening, disconnecting, doing some measurements, i restarted everything, did a disconnect of the z-link destination in the routing window,, manually reconnected and everything is back to normal. hope it dowsnt reoccur too often.
i could take some photos, not sure how to upload them here though.

Use "Attachments" tab for the pics. But only ONE picture per post allowed.
Or better (faster) - zip all your photos into one file and use https://turbobit.net to upload it for share...
