Just a little side track here, from all the war talk.. How's everyone doing on the contest tune? Anyone started? Let's get the contest BUZZ going on here! :smile:

As for me, I'm thinking of a couple of options.
1. I've done a bunch of mod2 drums (pretty simple, like eds)+couple of small synths combo right when I got Pulsar. So I can do a revival of those tunes. (okay, there are a few things I'd want to change)

2. Do phrase sampling from the small synths, with all the juicy effects... and then build from there. IE, just samples. It might sound cool... but is a bit beyond the "pure pulsar realtime power" concept. Could be creative though..

Also, I was thinking of what sort of production line I should use.. cuz it's no use if I beef everything up at the finalizing stage...

So here are my thoughts:
the "purist" one would be
synths->mixer+effects->maybe just a limiter->mixdown

and the "samplist" one would be
synths->mixer+effects->sample->mixer+effects->mixdown

The "juicy" one would be all the above pluse a multicomp at the end.

It awefully sounds cool to keep things simple... though it sure is limiting. So how's everyone doing on this anyway?

[we do have a gossip thread already, but] . . . . :wink:

I am sampling the Plasma a whole bunch. I am just doing preparation work. Will get the Sampler set up here in a few days. I'm going to either do: an electro tune, a d 'n b tune, or a weirder IDM track. or maybe try to incorporate all three. I am going to try and have a few realtime synth parts, but am also using a few Mod2FXMachines I made and some samples that I'll make. It'll be cool!

Keep in mind that Mod2 drums would be off limits - just the plasma for this one.

oh yeah.. the gossip thread.. (was out of my view when I posted) Hey John, if you've got the spare time, can you stick this whole thread into the gossip thread?

Anyway... mod2 effects are ok as long as they're effects and not really "sound sources" eh? Cool. That sure widens the horizon.

Hi Ken, well, i'm working alot on it these days. I'm on vacation till 14th of oct. so i'll put more times onto this contest.

For me this contest is really a good thing. Being alone at home to play music, sometime, i lack motivation, or goals, so i just fiddle with all osrts of sounds etc, but having a contest with a limit date a restriction is very cool, it pushes me to work hard and make me try thing i would not have tried by myself. Very cool!

I too did sampled the plasma alot, playing with my new STS5000 possibilities (incredible!). So far it's hard techno. A first for me in this area. I have a bunch of live synths, 3 inferno and 2 bluesynth! I'm scared to put too much now! I already deleted some complete tracks, just because after working on it the whole night, i realized it was way too overkill and the songs sounded 'overloaded' :razz:

Anyway, even if it sound like crap, i'm having alot of fun...

Just for fun, here's my actual setup :

Nice to see you guys getting into the spirit of the contest.

I started off my project with an old Bluesynth bassline I dug up from a bunch of loops I made when I first got my Pulsar about 6 months ago. I tried to port the patch I made over to the Hummel version but it's just not the same - funny that. Anyway, playing a trick with the Plasma drums and some serious EQ really made it kick, so I'm just bouncing along with that. I haven't been able to add anything more to it for a couple of weeks due to work commitments *yawn* but I'm setting some time aside this weekend to really get into it.

My initial aim was to avoid sampling altogether because I have sufficient DSP power to get away with it. Trouble is I've got so many FX ideas I'm probably going to have to fly-in a few samples and process the shit out of them :grin:

I like Ken's idea of using the Mod2 for FX. Anyone have a ready-made Mod2 version of the "Chopper" VST? OK, I'm being lazy! :smile: Making it myself will be fun, I'm sure.

Enjoy the challenge folks.

i'm very sorry but i don't think i will have time for this contest! (well, this might be good for you! :wink: )

actually i'm busy at:
1) work (I'm a PhD student)...
2) recording my guitar for my band's first cd at home with POD
3) making some background music for a fantasy game
4) recording a friend of mine, who is a guitar-master and give guitar lessons. we will release a rock-fusion "home made" guitar-method to sell to his students...
5) acquiring and video-editing some videos... and then making music on them (you will know everything when it's finished, you will be surprised at this!)

my only chance is to compose a music for the contest that suits my video-editing project...
let's see! :smile:
