My set up has always run pretty well, but recently I began using Gigasampler alongside Cubase SX and Pulsar II (SFP 3.1c), in Win XP Home, and now I'm getting just an occasional pop and click. I've done just about every tweak under the sun, except assigning priority to app's. So I'm thinking maybe it's time to go to a faster proc and more RAM. Here's my system:
Pentium III 750 mgHz
512 mb RAM
ASUS CUSL2 motherboard
Dual IBM Deskstar drives
Pulsar II
Pulsar 1
UAD-1
Soundblaster Audigy (disabled in DAW profile)
Win XP
Apogee Rosetta convertor (I use SPDIF into Pulsar)
Please tell me whay y'all think. Thanks.
BTW, I should add that I have a 350W PSU.

If it worked flawlessly before, I don't think the hardware is to blame.
Have you installed new software recently?
Have you updated Windows? You may want to check all those tweaks you've made. You see, updating Windows has a nasty tendency to reactivate services and reset some registry entries to a state that M$ think is best for you. Doesn't it makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside to know that M$ will always be there to help you and tell you what's really best for you?

Dougal, you say you've recently started using GIGA alongside the others as in running them all at the same time? Gigasampler is pretty resource intensive (from memory) so it may just be a case of having to bump up your system specs a bit. However, have you installed XP in ACPI or standard mode? Maybe time to try standard mode?
Hey, thanks for taking time to answer, guys.
Yes, bassdude, I am running them concurrently. That's why I mentioned this idea of prioritizing app's that are running at the same time, although I don't know much about how to do that.
I am currently running XP in Standard Mode. I did this when I installed the OS, not after the fact, which I know can be problematic.
When I set Pulsar II to 25ms latency, I don't have any probelms, but at that latency I feel that an acoustic piano, for example, is pretty much unplayable. 13ms is okay, 7 ms is much better, but at that latency I start to get pops and clicks.
So I thought maybe a faster proc would allow me to get the lower latencies without any pop/click. Again, they're not often, but frequent enough to warrant some changes. Thanks again.

Hi
This is always a tricky one. You could try a 'fresh' install of everything? I found this to fix some problems in the past, a real pain I know. Othewise more RAM and a faster uP.
I used to run gigapiano along side cubase and a luna 2.5. I recently got a copy of steinberg's the Grand, which I like, it's a little better sounding than the gigapiano and fits into Cubase nicely.
I now have a pulsar running 16xADAT+luna+I/OBox and SFP3.1c. I need 1Gb RAM to run everything smoothly, with 512Mb I couldn't run the Grand with all the whistles and bells.
Cheers Kenf

Yeah you sounded like you've covered most things but I thought I'd throw this out there just in case. Prioritizing processes :- get task manager up, go to processes, right click and select set priority (or something similiar to this method). Don't set anything to "Real Time".

Okay, I looked into fiddling around with Task Manager this evening.
Wow -- it shows quite a few app's running in the background? I had pretty much cleared out everything from the start menu and Services. None of them are using much memory, except Msg32.exe, which is using around 100-110 MB of memory! I should know what that is, but I can't rememeber...
Interesting to note that SFP doesn't consume hardly any CPU resources -- which makes sense, since that's the whole idea behind a DSP-based audio solution.
It is showing my CPU usage to be in the range of 65-70%. That doesn't sound too bad for having three relatively resource-hungry app's running at once, though it does sound like I could use some more "headroom." My ASUS board limits me to about a 1 gHz proc and I'm already at the maximum RAM (512 MB). This is what got me to considering a new mobo, faster proc and more RAM. Do I hear dual CPU's?:D Some articles I've read question the cost-benefit of dual CPU's, however, even when running resource-hungry app's like Photoshop or, he he, GigaStudio.
Oh yeah, isn't Msg32.exe the audio engine for GigaStudio? Must have something to do with that...
The three open app's -- Cubase SX, Scope Fusion Platform, and GigaStudio, are all set to "Normal" priority. Does this sound, uh, normal? What I mean is, what would you guys think would be some sensible settings in this regard?
I need to get a good, thourough WinXP book. Throw out my old Win98 book.
Anyway, tonight I was no longer hearing any more pops/clicks in the project I was hearing them in which prompted my origianl post. So maybe I don't have an issue after all.
I do still hear some popping when playing Steinway B (.gig) all by itself. Can't figure that out -- don't have that with "the Grand" or other samples.
Thanks again.

Yes, Msg32.exe the audio engine for GigaStudio.
And i suggest you set SFP the low priority, and leave SX and Giga to normal...
There is not much to do with those. I'd have a deep look into which services you need... There is alot of thing not needed usualy, and you can disable much of them, or at least put them to manual, so they will not start all the times.
