hi,
keep 98se if it works well. i still have the sensation that pulsar is more confortable with 98se. the same for vst 5.1 . sx (from 1.02) runs very well too, but it seems to use less memory in 2000/xp.
ciao.

Hi,

If I weren't a dual user -dual cpu needs NT4/Win2k/XPpro-, I'd go for Win98SE and install Winlite. Winlite restores some files from Win95 to get rid of the Internet Explorer etc, it's the biggest improving tweak you can do on Win98SE. For DAW only.

I heared Neutron say great things about WinME's MIDI timing.

So if you primarily do audio, get Win98SE with Winlite, if you're gonna use the machine as a sequencer, get WinME.

Oh, Win98 (and Win2k if I remeber well) is limited to 8 (or 10?) MIDI ports. So if you have an 8x8 patchbay and CW MIDI drivers, you possibly have to disable some ports in Device Manager to get the right ports to work.

XP (and probably 2k after SP3) is for me the most stable OS made by M$, but it needs thorough tweaking. I got it down to 32MB RAM used after boot. Win98 is easier to make so lean, but it's far from the stability XP offers IMHO.

Every OS has it's pro's and con's, you'll have to see what fits your setup best... You could also make initially 2 boot partitions, and compare.

Good luck!

Re: 'MIDI port'

A MIIDI port is used to transfer MIDI data from/to a sequencer (Cubase, Logic, Sonar,..) to/from MIDI devices (synths, samplers hard or soft). If you don't know what that is, then you shouldn't care too much about the limitation either  No worries.

What is MIDI?

Win98 can handle a few more than 10 ports
I'm currently using an 8x8 patchbay + 4 CW midi I/O devices, oh and Hubi's Midi LB, so that's 13 - never tried more

I can't say enough about 98lite though
it's perfect for a DAW IMHO
