Yesterday, 2 of 3 of my hard drives died. Maxtor 30GB ATA133 (the best of my old projects) and WD 80GB 8MB (containing all samples, and projects in progress) are no more. Damn. Checking on HD recovery now... ):
[update] The freezer restored the WD drive!! Thanks Nestor!!!

I have been thinking a lot about data security during the past days. I think I have come to a solution, wich unfortunately is too expensive to me :/
Ingredients:
Music PC must have LAN thru the chipset - not going thru the PCI-bus. Intel makes some 865 and 875 boards with this.
Another PC with a LAN and RAID card. This will be that PC, that stores the music data.
Too bad, I am not in the financial leage to buy a new music PC + RAID controller + several hard drives. But I think the idea is doable.
I realy hope you get back your data!

Hubird, cheers, I had already forgotten about that (must have been quite a trauma;) You're right, and I have no idea how comes. I mean, it's not that I like to kick the drives. Last year's crashed HD had proven duty, but...
Tom, the WD is 3 weeks old, should be their latest and greatest. Looks good for the cheaper versions

well, this is the rant thread: what really sucks on the Barracuda is that bloody Seagate label on that nice plane surface which would be a perfect place for a passive heat spreader.
They WANT to fry the drives to have you buy a new one.
cheers, tom
ps @Immanuel : that reminds me on some very early SCSI drives having a mechanical 'track zero' indicator fixed by a small scew. A super-smart dude wrote a driver to increase the head motors spead, so this thing got slashed back and forth on track searches more rapidly - and of course it didn't stand the duty for too long
Very funny in a time you paid 1 to 2 k € for a 20 meg drive. You could either sell a relacement drive or impress your customer that you were able to revitalize the thing with a screwdriver

you can remove the label I guess. Even if you can not, you can still plaster the drive with heat sinks. The label will just not pass the heat as well as the rest of the surface - but it will be better thatn nothing. I actually think it is a fun idea.
I have now for many months thought about adding small heat sinks to my CW cards. I only wonder, if it would void the waranty :/
Glad to see you saved your data at0mic

Immanuel, I'm running this machine at standard speeds. 21 dsp and 3 large & fast drives might need more cooling. To be honest, I removed a 60mm fan from the HD bay to make room for the WD 3 weeks ago. I've put the fan back, in front of the drives.
I've just restored the Maxtor, the last drive to backup, containing all samples!
