Now and again our next door neighbours are incredibly noisy until the early hours, with no consideration for us at all.
I'm not the revengeful type, although I have a vindicative streak in me.
I sometimes think of getting up early the following morning (when they will want to sleep until lunchtime) and putting a really disturbing bit of music on LOUD to get my revenge.

So, what track would you choose?
My first choice is:
King Crimson - 21st Century Schizoid Man.

Only a bit of fun, but what would you play?

If their meter box is outside, go pull the fuses while they're partying and throw them on the roof. (Oh Mikka...your vengeful nature is showing).

I had this exact same problem in a terrace house I used to live in. I hooked a cassette deck the the band's stage amp gear, pointed the foldback wedges at the wall and put on "AC/DC" live. I found that the best because it seemed much louder than anything else and had the advantage of really terrible screeching guitar solos which I'm sure would drive most normal people nuts.

It really did work though ! I'd leave it on for two or three songs and then miraculous silence. Funny thing is that I later met the neighbours and they turned out to be quite nice...

But seriously, urban noise is a big problem these days. The home systems have got too big, new apartments (at least in Australia) seem to be pathetically sound-proofed, and too few people seem to consider others.

Good luck Neil.

But seriously....why don't you just go talk to them. Get an invite when the party is on.....and get them to agree to a turn down time for the loud music.

Hi Mikka
Seriously, I wouldn't do anything in retaliation. We have spoken to them, but they're inconsiderate. So be it, we plan to move house soon anyway.
It's just nice to have a vindictive daydream sometimes and decide on a nice track to wake them up with.

I'm much too nice a guy to do anything.
More than anything, I thought it might be a fun topic for people to join in with, so we can see other people's dark side

Heehee, how many times do musos get to complain about noisy neighbours? i would choose either Glenn Branca's Symphonys No8 & 10 (multiple guitars at very high volume, check here) or Motohead's "Overkill" on a loop (then go out to a club for the night).

Generally retaliation is bad (they'd probably complain to the council or something!). However, i don't see a problem with making some hellish noise the night before you leave the house  , just make sure you can make a quick getaway the next morning though!

a well selected dose of Maria Callas in some 'in-despair-arias' will certainly do the job. The single voice is so much more adressing

But my real dark side would ask Spirit or Mikka for some cute 8 legged creatures from their outback... either to pollute the house secretely or for making a nice package.
Imagine their faces when they open that thing and a dozen or so creatures...

cheers, Tom

Le réveil des oiseaux or Oiseaux Exotiques by Olivier Messiaen
Ars Musica by Krystof Penderecki
Anything by Iannis Xenakis
And(my favorite)
Lux Aeterna by Gyorgy Ligeti(the music that plays when the monolith appears in 2001:A space odyssey)
Are we listening?..

I think that Maria Callas is a good idea, but perhaps too vindictive

I've had a really good idea to cure the problem though - I'll play them some of my own stuff - enough to make anyone submit

The worst "music" I ever heard was when I lived downstairs from a muso who had just got a new drum machine and didn't know how to program it  it was just woefully out of time - sounds coming in everywhere, and this went on for hours.... I think he must have left it running while he read the manual.

that's a real good one  but I'll try to top it with my AKAI XR10 drummy suffering from some sort of progressive dementia - it will certainly outperform any weirdo

well, american ghettos have multiple cultures happening.there are mexicans, who are partial to loud parties often(norteno and ranchero music,LOTS of bass).there are african americans, who like loud bass rap which rattles the windows and knocks stuff off the wall.the cambodians like big parties and loud karaoke which plays until the next day with the same bad singer singing the same song for 8 hours.i am here as well, with my band rehearsals(reggae) and recording projects(could be anything.).all passing automobiles have sound systems that would make a normal human deaf in 30 seconds.no one bothers anyone else or complains,no matter how ridiculously uncomfortable the noise is.it's kinda cool.

Spirit, you're right, I am blessed with quite considerate and low-noise neighbours apart from the odd party we all host once in a while, but what really REALLY gets to me is when someone decides he/she wants to play the piano/violin/flute/whatever - even at low volumes- and stumbles around in the same easy piece for hours on end...

Mind you, I know practice is the only way forward, and I am also aware that I am an amateur if there ever was one, but I DO wear headphones

Neil B - that would be my contribution - play someting yourself deliberatly horrible, restarting and stumbling over chords etc. I hope you get it solved in the end.

Cheers

I had a talk about the same topic a few days ago. The best I could think of was:

1) move your speakers to the wall, so they realy can apreciate the sound, that will meet them.

2) hook up a video or pc with DVD drive (prefered) to the speakers.

3) get a porn movie.

4) put it on repeat and leave for the weekend.

*) if you want to be realy annoying, make a 20 second clip and put that on repeat.

!) don't expect them to love you.

Anyway, changes are, you have other neighbours too, so it may do more harm than good. Also leaving it on at loud volume for a weekend may result in a visit from the local police.

I have a friend who had the same problem. So he went and removed the front number plate off every car parked in the street outside. No more noisy parties! (He's older and grumpier than I am...)

Actually, we caused a few upsets once. So the people up the road rang the police and told them we were all on grass. We got "raided" three times in the next month......and not a pothead in the house.

No more parties either.

Here's an idea:
1) & 2) as you said but 3) Get lots of porn and 4)Spend whole weekend watching it

Why dont you record a dozen of friends for a couple of minutes loughing and screaming like hell, like in a paroxistic joke, an other couple of minutes of sex moans, a well shouted "Mommy come!" from a child (female 4-5 years old is the best) and make of each a cd tune.

Then EVERY time you are not at home, you just play the track for the mood you decide with "repeat", but not at an exagerated level, the level that is just well audible, near a wall so that only the "enemies will get it".

Sex track can be nice in the afternoon, when the kids are home, people loughing and screaming at 10 p.m.: if they have friends, it's known that another party nearby is a very disturbing thing for the mood of the first one, and to end a fantastic. evidently sampled and inesorable "Mommy" at4-5 a.m (if they go to bed at 1 a.m.,the first three ours are very deep sleeping, so noises usually don't work, but at 4-5 a.m. they will wake up, and have the coming day painful...hehe hi volumes not required...hehe
