during my research into centrino notebooks I most liked the look of the Toshiba Tecra S1 and IBM T40p.

I know you tried a Toshiba, but they have many models in the range, the cheaper ones will be more built for consumers..

I also think Dell should be good, but I only really have experience with an older model (Inspiron 8100).. we are still waiting for conclusive tests by Dehuszar with his Precision M60 Pentium-M model (this is the chip in Centrino notebooks).

peace

Greetings Pulsarians,

I have yet to buy a Magma chassis because it seems like a lot of money for something that should be relatively simple - i.e. PCI to Firewire adaptor.

Dehuszar, how is your Centrino set-up working out? I have been told by some people in the industry to avoid Centrinos, as they are not powerful enough - is this true?

Surely it would be possible to get a custom chassis built up by a computer expert? Does anyone know about such a possibility?

Would be grateful for any input, the situation is really frustrating, creamware were pretty useless when I emailed them - just telling me to get the Magma. A bit rich, when I consider all the money I spent so long ago purchasing the Pulsar 2 board.

Also, if the Magma was the only way to go, which motherboard/spec should I be looking for in a Laptop to get the best out of the Pulsar 2?

HELP!

Peace

My rig is great!!! Centrinos are fantastic. Whoever told you they were underpowered doesn't understand that gHz ratings don't tell you how fast a system will run.

I'm actually typing from bed as we speak. I was working on tracks playing with Zarg's Ambient and toying with Stylus by Spectrasonics. Both are lots of fun so far.

The magma is to my left by my feet. It makes some noise, but much less than a desktop machine. Composing in bed is really the life! I can only recommend that you do what you think will help out your music. If you REALLY want to be portable, this is the way to go.

Having said that, you want to be careful about which Centrino you get. Centrino is just a chipset/wireless mini-PCI combo. ...marketing essentially. The centrinos are made on all kinds of motherboards. Dell tells me that this board came from ASUS. I believe them, though I should have learned better than that for now, as none of them actually know an answer to a single question I've asked them without putting me on hold for like 8 minutes.

I tried several machines before I landed the Precision M60 by Dell. Their tech support blows, but the laptop has all the right equipment to run SFP and so it stayed with me.

If you have any questions beyond what's been discussed in the thread, you can email me privately.
