midi controllers in XTC
Help!!!
i've just bought the Minimax, ive decided to try it in Cubase sx 2.01 since this one has full PDC. I was amazed!!! It worked flawlessly. every audio mixdown was perfect. From now on, i will definitly use the xtc possibility.
But i discovered one small problem which i hope someone over here has the answer to.
if i assign midicontrollers to my minimax synth and i store the cubase song, my assigned controllers are lost. I saw in the preference menu of the minimax (or any other xtc synth) that you can store your midi controllers assignments. But how can i do that without storing also my sound parameters?

There's 2 ways:
- SFP saves the assignments in the project too, pitty XTc apparently doesnt. Save the remote control preset for the xtc device, no sound setting will be included, and save the list of course. Also, if they're not automatically reloaded in XTC mode, do it manually heh.
- Better might be to use SX MIDI remote control, especially if your controller supports it: see SX Operation Manual p.322 for more info. I once did an implementation for SX and the pc1600x, it's still available on my homepage if you happen to have such controller. Or look further on the web, someone probably wrote such implementation for you by now
Maybe you can even mix "SFP right-click remote" and the Write Automation for remote as explained on p.324
Hope this helps better...

Hi atoMic
I have just tried saving a midi controller 'preset' in XTC mode and saving everything, then reloading SX and the midi controller information is not loaded. But if you then load the 'preset' from the midi controller list it loads OK execpt for the modulation range which starts at maximum.
I am a little confused by what you and Quifster have done.... Surely you still need to set up you synth to receive midi data on the parameters you need to control? or does each synth have a implementation chart or am I completely missing the point?
Regards
Kenf

Hi at0mic
I am still confused??? If I am using a synth and want to control the filter envelope how do I know what midi controller number to use? Surely I still need to setup the filter envelope on the VST synth to recieve a particular number. I use my kaoss pad that has X axis preset to send on 12 and Y on 13 and right click the parameter I want to control then set it to 12 or 13. Then select the VST track in SX and it sends midi control over that channel and controls.
How does using Midi Remote help.... I think I am being a bit thick today?
Sorry to be a pain...

Hi Quifster
I have used the midi remote control to use my DDX3216 to control the SX mixer before. But are you saying you can control Creamware Synths and setup a controller for them? That would be useful having different midi controller presets for different synths.I couldn't see how to control anything other than the SX mixer?
Regards

Ok, i think i know what you are missing over there.
if you make a template for the remote control be sure that you loaded your xtc synth of synths in your sx project. now if you go to remote control, you can assign any controller to any parameter of your xtc synth.
i have for instance a project with 3 minimax synths. i specified a template for that purpose in the remote contoller. i can tweak all 3 minimax synths in realtime this way, at any moment. just like hardware
After you have setup your template you can store it as an xml template and you can load that template whenever you want.
now that i was so positive about the xtc mode i thought it might be possible also to use the live monitor function of wavelab to see the spectral analysis in realtime from my sounds in cubase sx. Guess what..... I succeeded! I've modified the XTCproject.pro and added a wave container to the mainoutput. In Wavelab i assigned my creamware play/rec1 input/output as my main soundcard source.
now if you click the live monitor button, every sound you get from cubase is analysed realtime by wavelab. so you got FFT analysis, Spectrum analisis, the levels, phase vie , osciloscopes. Now this is a very powerfull setup
XTC was not allways useable for me, but this way it's totally incredible.
p.s.
and don't get me started about all the adat possibilities in seperate asio channels
Creamware, keep up the good work in this difficult times!

I've got this set up - fab
Is there a way to control the master volume of Minimax though? Curiously, I can't seem to find it in the list of parameters :S
I've set the knob I want as a volume knob to control the minimax channel fader i nthe VST mixer, but it'd be nice to control the minimax's instrument volume properly..

It is only by default that remote covers no VST Instruments. You can make your own and share the .xml files of course, but much also depends on the controller. I made plenty for the Pc1600x, my controller, to control VSTi (not XTC, I'm off of that;). The Pc1600x implementation needs special sysex/setup for that controller, and many controllers have their own ways. That's why you find a couple controllers preset in the SX list.
Also, in SX you could use the 'MIDI Control' insert plugin to automate some XTC synth parameters using the classic SFP CC# style.
So much choise makes life difficult, sometimes Huub is lucky he's on mac
