XP Software Profiles?

Hello!

I ve got an XP-related question. I know that in XP one can create different hardware profiles but what about a software profile?

The problem is: I use InCD (which comes with Nero) to use CDRW and DVDRW as huge floppy disks. In order for InCD to function Windows loads on startup InCD.exe and there is also an InCD service running all the time. This thing per se doesnt bother me. The problem is that InCD is interracting with Gigastudio (since I upgraded to 2GB of RAM) and doesnt let me load more 36% of Gigastudio load.

Is there any automated way in order to start XP with or without InCD? I dont want to edit msconfig all the time and enabling and disabling InCD. Any ideas?

Perhaps too radical for you, but Double Boot is my answer. I use it since day one, 6 years ago, with very good results. Lately, I have even uninstalled half of XP in the Studio side, and my computer runs extremely fast, everything I do is faster, and the load of RAM has been reduced by about 22%.

If you ever want to build a Double Boot, I recomend BootMagic, from PowerQuest, this is what I use. It's a software you can trust. Hope to have helped a little here.

Hardware profiles will determine what drivers load (you will probably have to right click & 'disable' hardware in the appropriate profile to keep it from automatically detecting things as 'new' btw).

Unfortunately it sounds like the app that you're having a problem with is based on a service. Services start when the OS boots up rather than when you login, so trying to tie this to a user account won't work.

What you CAN do is create a user account for your Gigastudio and disable the .exe for that account (msconfig or tweak app if its not in your Startup folder in the start menu), then go into Start>All Programs>Administrative Tools>Services and change the settings on that service. 2 possibilities would be: 1. set it to 'automatic' and then when you login to the 'gigastudio' account go into your services and right click on the service & choose 'stop'. With no exe loaded on boot and the service halted it shouldn't interfere any longer. The other option is to keep your current user account, disable the .exe and set the service to 'manual' so that you will have to manually start it everytime you need it you will have to first start the service then run the .exe.

Incidentally I do this with a Wacom tablet, my 3d app's dongle driver and a few other things that run as services (I leave them off till I need them).

Also... Check out computer Management > Services & Applications > Services > "Log On" tab page

Here you can set up which Services start in which hardware profile.

Nestor, my old PC was double-boot (actually quadruple-boot!) but I think it is not worthy to make my DAW double-boot for just a service and an .exe. However, if I dont find other solution, then I ll make it double-boot with one boot only with Audio Appl and the other with Nero and Norton Ghost.

BTW, does Boot Magic let you change the size of a partition without erasing it? Or, is there any program or any other way to do that?

why use incd? xp already has a file burning program in it...

Gary, incd allows to use "formated" RW-CD as 550MB drives, not to burn CDs.

btw, Rodos I always use incd loaded and never got any problem with it, even with gigastudio32 tho I don't often use it.

Hello to all and thank you for your replies!

I used not to experience any problems with InCD as long as I had 1GB of RAM. Since I upgraded to 2GB the problems started.

By disabling InCD and applying Mattias Henningson's registry tweak I can load up to 1090MB of samples (figure for Msg32.exe according to Task Manager}.
