Diablo is pretty close, linguistically speaking.

The beer you're thinking of is "La Maudite", 8.3 degrees alcohol.

They also made "Don de Dieu", 9.3 degrees. I stopped drinking before they put that one out though.

We might compare intellectual achievements of our greatest thinkers, natural wonders, greatest artists, best composers, museums, architecture, parks...

No, after a quick chat about the weather it's on to beer...

What are your favourite local brews? The more obscure, the better!

Well, Johann, if that's your real name...

I think that I personally make some of the best beer in the Lower Mainland. Hops, hops hops. My actual job is making wine and beer for a living.

I'll put my Brew up against anybody's!!

C'mon, pop over and try some!

Rod

Except for parks and weather, Canada doesn't have any of that. And the weather is all bad. Especially Margaret Atwood. She's a bloody hailstorm.

My sister sent me pics of Gaudi's architecture recently though. Good lord I've been living under a rock. Gaudi rules!

NPrime: H*ll yeah! I definitely have to make a trip over from the Island. Save a bottle or two for me...

And yes, Johann is my real name.

Probably cause an argument...

Something people can agree on!

Talking of the weather, I think France is currently having a taste of what's heading Britain's way in the next day or so...

I doubt we could find many people willing to discuss the lyrical expressions of Alban Berg in his 1924 Violin Concerto, Spirit. But when BEER is mentioned: YEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeHAAaaawww!

I now how to integrate all of these things:

thinkers who drank great beer, best beer ever drank while experiencing natural wonders, great artists and the beer they drank, composers who sound best after drinking lots of beer, best beer cooling methods used while camping in parks...and of course best beer drinking weather.

Blazeboylan is right about the complete lack of culture here though, you europeans don't know how lucky you are...or maybe you do...I'm going to have a beer and think about it.

Cheers!!

Johann,to answer your question,if I run our of my own beer I drink:

Flying Dog Pale Ale

Nelson Brewery's Paddywhack IPA.

Tree Brewing Hophead

Old Yale Brewing Co. Pale Ale

Anything from Sailor Hagars in North Van, especially the Bengal.

Almost any beer from Portland, Oregon. Double Bastard is absolutely stunning.

You should be able to get most of these over there in Victoria.

Geez I've never heard of any of those. Except the Tree beer and *maybe* Double Bastard... Is that a porter?

Incidentally I spent a week in Portland last year and couldn't find any local ales. Everything was from California! They do have amazing bookstores though.

------

Best thinker who drank great beer: Soren Kierkegaard.

Best wine ever drank while experiencing natural wonders: Il Musaico, some cheapo brand from Toscani that is no longer any good. Who knows, maybe it was never any good!

Great artists and the beer they drank: Bernini drank Guinness, according to historical documents.

Composers who sound best after drinking lots of beer: Holst, R. Strauss. They only sound good after beer IMO.

Best beer cooling methods used while camping in parks: Leave it outside up at Mt Garibaldi at the end of August. It will be frozen by morning.

Best beer drinking weather: Too many variables, cannot decide.

Worst composer to listen to with a hangover: John Cage.

J

Edit: Paul, who is Alban Berg?

Also I think Diablo is made by RB Brewing or something like that... I've seen La Maudite but never tried it, and never even seen Don de Dieu!

R&B Brewers make a diablo, yes.

I know Barry the "B" quite well.

In fact I own shares in the company.

Drink up!

Hey, all those beers are BCLCB listed, so your local liquor store has to bring them in if you ask for them.
