OK so quick test for Igor: get rid of the Luna Box and try the Analog in.
(Have we been through this before?!? I've lost track...)

Hi! I guess I tried that more than one time. Problem is the same, very noticeable hum and crackling. I found out something interesting: if I run a program called KurzSee almost all of the crackling is gone. What could produce that crackling and why does it go away when I run that program.
Link to kurzsee:
http://www.steevee.com/kurzsee/download.htm
(this is program for controlling Kurzweil synths from PC).
I'm about to get new power supply this week. What do you think about these and could they solve my problem:
Enermax 460W Netzteil EG465AX-VE(G) FMAX
Tagan TG480-U01 480W ATX
These are both 100$ PSU.
So what solved problem till now:
- cutting the ground wire in electric cable that powers my preamp
- running kurzsee program - it only reduces crackling
I'm not sure what is the risk of electric hazard when using ungrounded preamp with my luna. I can normally play guitar and hold the microphone, nothing happens. But of course I would really like to be sure that nothing bad happens
Tnx a lot and sorry for my bad english!
Best regards, Igor Benko

I surrender... that may have been a brilliant theory by me (why the powersupply is responsible for noise), but well - it has been proven wrong by myselfOn 2004-07-11 12:19, Zeitlicht wrote:
Hi,
I had the same problem about two years ago.
I is the luna I/O. Not the powersuply or your gear.
...

I can't be totally shure because my current system lacks a CD-Writer (which the previous had), but on the other hand it now has an additional Pulsar - and the 'underestimated' 90 Watt toy works flawless.
I made a clean install and have the most noisefree system ever, there's not a faint of hum or sizzle...

embarassed, but also happy, Tom

Not necessarily. If your noise problem was solved by replacing the power supply then it might have been some kind of fluke. But then again, disk drives suck a lot more current than chips. So it wouldn't be surprising if a disk drive (especially an older one) was the straw that broke the PSU camel's back.it has been proven wrong by myself
'unfortunately' I changed several parts of the system and so it's almost impossible to reconstruct a certain state, but the noise level hadn't been a real problem.
My 'regular' phono pre has -66db, so I wouldn't really bother much about -70 or so on another channel - I don't have 32 to mix
but of course, the cleaner the better
I've checked the specs of the disks and both are almost identical, installed the a DVD writer, so now I HAVE more load than before - still dead silent.
Noise defeat is almost like black magic...
cheers, Tom

sorry Igor for my confusing post, I'm a bit clueless myself now...
I WAS really convinced of improving the overall noise level on the analog ins when I exchanged the powersupply - the original PSU was only 90 Watt (about the size of 3 cigarette packs) I assumed '...of course it's underpowered'.
So I connected the next best (250 Watt) and the zipping noise when moving windows with the mouse, clicking menus or during hd activity was gone.
A couple of days back, after a new system install (an additonal Pulsar and a A16) I was surprised to suddenly see a -85 dB level on the analog ins (it had never been THAT low).
Out of curiosity I just re-installed the old 90 Watt PSU and shocking: the low noise level remained.
I'm happy of course - but I can't explain it, except with the new Windows installation.
The previous one had developed into a real mess over time and possibly had some missing/corrupted drivers.
Before you start to wonder 'what the hell is he fiddeling with such a strange box and toy PSU ?' - that box is roughly the size of 25 LPs, I could even carry it with me on the bike, and it contains 2 Pulsars
I don't buy too much PC hardware, so I'm not exactly experienced.
My last PSUs were labeled 'be quiet! Power Supply Blackline 400 Watt' and make a solid impression (heavy).
2 slow internal fans (temperature controlled and in fact quiet), and connectors for 3 extra fans capable to run for some time after system shutdown.
cheers, Tom

OK, guys you really gave me a lot of good advices and none of them worked. I tried everything. Let me describe my current situation:
- I get noise when moving mouse even if I just connect luna out to onboard soundcard line-in
- I tried to change every latency
- I tried swapping cards between slots
- I disabled everything except luna, graphic card and hard drive, I even unplugged those
- I tried my friends enermax 500w powersupply
- I tried my friend's radeon x800 xt
- I tried to put my luna in his computer, he's overclocker, so there's all the best in there
- I lifted ground on my computer
- I have done everything that could be done!
So is there anything I can do? Please help, I'm getting crazy!
Tnx in advance!
Best regards, Igor
P.S.: I moved to a new location in a "big" city, where the electricity is certainly fine!

hmm... this is strange.
i have exactly the same kind of noise, but ONLY with the 2496 box, not at all with the analog input on the pci card.
it also reacts to mouse movement - which stops when i unplug the monitor, but the noise is still there. the moment i put the plug back in i notice flashes in the socket.
i used to have the problem connecting the 2496 box to my mixer's outputs, but in that case the noise simply disappeared from one day to another - dont know why. i do now have the same problem connecting my micpreamp to the box - but as soon as i pull the plug out of the socket the noise is gone (simply turning off the preamp doesnt change a thing).
seems very unlogical to me...
