Hi all,

Not sure how many of you live in the united states but on the east coast there is a massive sized hurricane that is almost the size of the state of florida heading right me, I live in west palm beach, the last hurricane we had that was this powerfull was hurricane andrew which left most of southern florida devestated, it was castrophic, im pretty nervous at this point.

Me and the wife went out today and stocked up on the essentials, water, milk, diapers for the baby. In the morning I need to put up the hurricane shutters, they are rated for 125mph winds, this storm is already at 147mph and getting stronger it seems.

Hopefully everything will be ok, my home is of new construction but it still concerns me deeply. Luckily for us there is a brand new highschool down the street which is also a shelter incase things get really bad. People are starting to go crazy around here also, most of the gas stations are out of gas, batteries are non existant and plywood is sold out in all major home depots.

Just posting to vent a bit, I hope things will be ok, the storm is scheduled to make land fall late friday eve, early saturday, this atleast gives me enough time to fasten everything down and bord up, there is a slim chance the storm will make another turn and head further up the coast towards jacksonvill, which would mean I would just get heavy tropical storm winds and rain, ide rather that

Be safe every one and if there is any one else on the Z from the east coast, be safe and I hope things turn out ok for you.

Cheers!

yikes! I thought the last hurricane was bad enough.. These things worry me as I'll be moving to the Miami area early next year. Hope you make it through with minimal damage. Make sure the baby stays safe!

Oh dear, I hope everything will end good for you, your family and all people who are affected in this, too.
Crazy, those weather excesses getting more and more, even here in Europe.

I saw a documentary about 'hurricane hunters', armed with a video camera...

I'll keep my fingers crossed...

And all the industries in the world say "No, there is no such thing as Global Warming. There's nothing to worry about..."

Yeah, right...

Hello PaulMartin.
I agree with you about the nonsense denial about Global Warming.

I just want to add this info in respect to hurricanes, they have been allways raging on earth's oceans since this planet became a real water planet. They can be considered as nature's airconditioning systems that translate heat from tropical areas to the poles, helping earth's balance of temp. They also help submarine life by stimulating the food chain by creating "colder areas" on the ocean for plankton to grow.

As you pointed out.., more heat induced in our atmosphere results in more an stronger hurricanes showing up (earth's trying to balance). So people pay the price for politics.

BasicPitch: May everything goes fine for you and your family..and thousands of families. Our best vibes are with you.

Hi all,

Well Frances as shown in the nasa photo does not look like its going to turn, I believe it to hit more in the st. lucie orlando area which is roughly between 1.5-2.5 hours north of me, which means I am going to get the outer rim of the main hurricane aswell as massive tropical storm bands.

Today I spend 12 hours non-stop putting up my hurricane shutters on the house, what a nightmare, I have a two story home that is quite large roughly 21 windows in total on both stories, I was on a ladder 40' in the air with a power drill, no fun and scared as I have ever been, I have no experience hanging shutters let alone being two stories up on a ladder heh.

We plan to have the family come to us and ride it out in the house, if everything gets really bad appox 1 mile from my home is a brand new highschool that has a shelter rated for 170mph winds, so thats our fail safe.

My wife spent the day taking digital photo's of all our belongings inside the home incase of a catastophy, then I would have documentation for the insurance company.

Im just glad I got the shutters up today because they say by tomorrow afternoon (friday) roughly 3-4pm there will be 75-80mph winds and that would not be to fun hanging shutters in that

I just want to take the time to thank you all for the good vibes and positive wishes for me and my family, we appreciate it greatly.

Well ill post back tomorrow once things get cooking and we see what we are really in for, best case scenario would be for the storm to shift further north leaving the west palm/ft lauderdale area which storm tropical bands mostly, either way we are going to get something from this.

As far as leaving the news is showing 30 mile back up on the highways from people up north that are in the direct path coming down to where we are located, so its pretty much stay here and hope for the best.

The good news is, my home is of new construction 2 years old, has the most current safety rating for hurricanes and is built entirely with concrete blocks.

Well, ill check back with you all again.

Cheers!

Just to save some of you the trouble,
a 170mph wind is roughly 76 meters/sec.

Not sure about other countries, but Japan measures winds in meters/sec. The biggest typhoons we get here still in the 40 m/s range, so man... I wish you luck. I can't even imagine what 76 m/s is going to be like. Is so strong that houses get blown down? Or only tornadoes do that?

Ummm... if your house isn't up to the job won't it be too difficult to get to the school ? I've been in a couple of bushfire situations (nothing too serious though) but it's bloody frightening to be faced with massive natural phenomena. I feel for you...

BY THE TIME IT GETS TOO BAD WILL YOU STILL BE ABLE TO GET TO THE SCHOOL? I DON'T THINK YOU WILL BE WALKING THERE IN 75 MPH WINDS. CONCRETE BLOCK HOUSE SOUNDS PRETTY SAFE THOUGH, THE WOLF COULDN'T BLOW THAT ONE DOWN...
