Morning all,

Well things have taken a slight turn for now seeming a tad more positive but could become far worse hehe.

Currently as the storm passes the bahamas it has slown down considerably in moving speed. They now project the storm to make land fall on saturday as was said, the semi positive part was they downgraded the storm to a catagory 3, that means winds of 111-122mph.

The bad news is on a slow moving hurricane it becomes increasingly difficult to project where it will make land fall, the explanation givin was think of a spinning top, at start with full speed the top spins in a straight line, but as it loses speed it starts to wobble and canspin out of control.

Well, I just woke up, have to get a few more things in order, thanks again all.

PS. nprime, I wouldnt be walking in those conditions, I would just get in the truck and haul some arse as fast as I can hehe, obviously not the safest thing in the word but in a hurricane situation if things becane so dire I had to leave, there is not much else in option.

The news is asking people not to come to the shelters unless they live in homes that are not secure or mobile homes, people with special needs etc etc, we'll see I guess =)

Cheers!

If you want to see what 150mph+ winds can do here is an image of Andrew we had a few years back, roughly 1992.

A couple of years ago we had the worst winds in Denmark since many many years ago. I think we measured 50m/s, and people where adviced to not leave house unless there was a severe healt danger if staying. I hope noone will have to walk outside in 170mph - big things will be flying around with great force.

The wind speeds slowed down to 120 m/h but they may pick up speed after it leaves the Bahamas

Yes, indeed.
One fact about Florida: the southern part of the state is about 1 meter above sea level:

By the way, the image above is being updated every 15 minutes (check the time at the top of image).

One last thing, PlanetZ host (bayhosting.net) is located in Florida, so maybe there will be interuptions in service.

Looking at the satelite image, it almost seems it is starting to move towards Carolina?

I wish all you Floridians a safe passage there. Those pictures are scary as hell. It's just HUGE.

Yes, planetz is hosted in florida, so if it
goes down for awhile, you'll know why.

Hoping for the best for everyone!

John, do you have a backup of planetz database?
And wat is the size of it?

This is one of the things that reminds me that just copying your files to a cd may not be enough
Big companies always have backups of their important data in separate geographical locations.

It saw bad pictures on TV of what happend in Florida. I hope they are allright.
It gets slower though, so Frences will look on Florida in the night to Sunday on Florida. But the offshots made many damages already.

Yes, the database is backed up periodically. It's about 17mb. Unfortunately, I have no way to backup all the user files (music/devices/etc), as that is multiple gigabytes...

Press say,
Frences has lost power since it has reach Florida and was demoted in his category.
It still has a speed of 150km/h.
No all clear signal yet, though.

Frences hit the land with all his power that night. It is raining there for hours now in a 300km wide band. Many streets are flooded, many houses were uncovered, hundres of trees were unroot and many power supply lines were cut millions of people were or are without power.
