Not the mysterious female location, but a help to working out what codecs you need for playing various video formats on your computer, particularly .avi files.

gspot analyses any video file and informs you what codecs are required to play it and whether you have this codec installed on your computer.

Windows only, can be found here:

I've finally been able to play some .avi files which friends have sent to me ages ago!

GSpot is also included in these codec packs:

You don't need GSpot, all you have to do is open the file in Media Player and look at it's properties.

Hmmm...I don't really agree - WMP doesn't give you half the information you need to find the necessary codec(s).

That, and it's super-annoying habit of:

"Windows needs to download additional codecs to play this file...FAILED"

Not sure if a 100% failure rate is impressive or not...

You might be right, all the video files that I have, WMP can open without asking for a codec.

Right clicking on AVI and choosing properties

However, I already have the XVID decompressor installed.

That's a good tip.

gspot has this to say:

Stream Type: OpenDML AVI
Metadata: VirtualDub build 18160, release
(Video)
Codec: xvid (Codec not installed!)
Runtime: 01:50, xy: 240x320
Bitrate: 595 kb/s
FPS: 15
Qf: 0.516 bits/pixel

(Audio)
PCM Audio
88 kb/s
11024 Hz

Looks like I need yet another codec
