I have heard and read that Sharp make the best MD models for mic recording. And they have the most features for it.
Just to let you know, I'm looking at getting a Sharp IM-DR420 (~$230 USD) And most likely a Rode NT3 mic.
From what I've heard from people that know all about MD's is this, MD recorders are a LOT better than they used to be. So when people bash them you need to find out how long ago and what models are they talking about. To be fair to the newer MD's.

about mp3 encoder
hmm, i asume that mic in is mono
so 112 kb/s for mono signal ain't that bad
if 128 for stereo is near cd quality?
LOL. I love it when people think 128kb/s is "near" CD quailty. LOL... Let's just say 320kb/s is a little closer.
"Near" is a word of perception... How long is a piece of string.
I dont mean to have a go at you. It just really gets me angry that this "near" CD quaily is a becoming a standard. We are going backwards because people dont want to buy a CD! Dont get me wrong The technology is great. I just think it's misleading and misused.
And yes, (for those who's ear's stand up at what may seem a contradiction) I'm VERY annoyed that MD's compress the Audio to some extent!

it's all a bit relative (won't comment on mp3 though, nor MD here). have you seen the mics professionals use for outdour recordings? a friend works as a sound recorder for a television company, doing interviews. his little box contains four mics, a top recorder, and this all goes with a telescope boom. this small setup goes for way beyond 5000 USD.
i'd invest your time and money in looking for a a nice wind screen. hehe, you might also use your mums panty hose and cloth hanger for this.
one little gust of wind, and your ears won't give a damn anymore on what gear the outdoor sound was recorded on (unless REAL pro stuff (=out of your reach) was used).
too bad, shops probably won't let you take out a dat, MD and several mics to do some outdoor test recordings.

Of course!
Anyway here's a link to the mic I'm thinking of getting, it also comes with a wind shield.

tbh, i thought i quoted your post...
as far as 320 being a beeing a bit closer,
do you mean for further processing that will pronounce any artifacts, or just for playback on sub 1000$ speakers?

not very much on topic, i know

It terms of MP3, 128kb/s vs 320kb/s... 320 has a lot better sound quailty! I mean that is quite obvious. And yes, I can hear the difference. IMO 320kb/s should be the standard for MP3.
Yes, it's true to say that on cheap speakers it is harder to tell that difference. But it's still there. With that in mind, I have been able to tell the difference of MP3 vs CD on very cheap PC speakers. Direct comparison though.
Why do people mix on $1000+ monitor speakers? So you can hear EVERYTHING. If anyone is serious about music, monitor speaker choice is deafinitely towards the top of the list.

I have a Sony MD recorder ($149) + a RadioShack dual-capsule condenser stereo lavelier mic ($30) that is GREAT. the MD supplies phantom automatically to it's mic input. The quality is Quite Good - I presume that the RS mic uses panasonic capsules such as many hi-end small capsule mics do (Earthworks for example)
beyond that - it is all in the engineering, but this setup can yield great results

I have a friend who wandered around India with a sony MD recorder (the little square kind) and a $120 Sony stereo mike. The sound quality is actually very impressive! If you are looking for very portable field recording on a budget, MD is the way to go. I have seen MD recorders on ebay pretty cheap...
