Both Jaco and your black bro probably needed some type of medication ....... I doubt that will change even with a gig... best wishes
Sometimes a good motivation and something to rebuild self appreciation can be the best medication, or at least it's the only basis on wich you can hope that some "chemical" medications will have a full effect...but human mind can show some amazing possibilities. Let's hope....

Agreed,
I am too impatient to play nursemaid with anyone these days other than my youngest son, or my fiancee, who is actually my anchor. I just visited him today and watched him shoveling gravel and singing. It is this whistle while you work attitude that negro spirituals were composed from, in a time when faith was all one had. I have assured him if he stays clean, he will sucseed, as I have a knack 4 sucsess in this decadent playground 4 adults. I took him a cheapo 279 USD Fender Jazz w/ Seymour Duncans to keep him occupied when not going to classes and work. It's strange that all my life I never paid attention to this American tragedy, and now I find myself concerned. I now find myself wondering what these guys did before they fell so hard.
I will post on his progress, as this guy is an amazing talent, right up there with Oteal Burbidge. Who is a god amongst men on a 5 string IMHO.

Happily Surprised With These Replies,

I is perhaps a good idea telling hime that there are many of us that are supporting him, being musicians like him.

We could write him here some words, then you copy and past them, and let him read them, I am sure that the energy of and good vibrations of people can help him, even if he doesn't know us at all. What do you think? If you agree, we can start a thread called something like, "Get up and walk" or anything, so he gets motivated. I would be the first to write, and I would love to do it. It's your bussiness anyway, it is just a suggestion as I know that when a musician talks to a musician, it is like children talking to themselves, it is a special relationship.

My comment came from my life experience ..... could have been me. While I don't claim to have that level of talent or self discipline, I've seen the underbelly of life... from underneath it. Some of these people have lead remarkable and successful lives, prior to losing it all, often to alcohol. But what were they medicating with the alcohol?

A man gave a vendor $10 for a $2.50 hot dog at a buddhist food stall. The vendor just thanked him and pocketed the money. "Where's my change?" the buyer asked. The buddhist nodded wisely and said, "Change must come from within".

Tell him he has people from around the world wishing him well.

You know I use to bring them beer and water, not realising what I was doing.
I figured they'd want a nice cold one on a hot day. How stupid. Since I have been around drugs and alcohol all my life w/o having any problems, I assumed wrong.
Brotha' Man Jeremiah appears healthy and alert. When I asked him if I could bring him anything he said no, got everything I need right here. Except for the foul bastard he bunks with that snores louder than the Three Stooges.

This Brotha'Rocks!!
Had him over to a rehersal where the bassist left his SRW's for a few days. We quickly ran through an old jazz funk number by the Crusaders called Ballad For Joe Lewis ( The Boxer ).Then we did a cover number that grooves real hard called All Your Love by Luther VanDross. My fucking GOD this cat can play!! I am looking forward to this gig, as working with this kind of talent, I can play any style and enjoy it.
He has however retained a few foul habits, such as scratching his balls while he talks to you and such. But I didn't want to ruin the jam. The drummer and I were having such a good time. The guitarist wants him now, but as I said, he needs to make a slower comeback, and possibly jump back into life where he jumped out.
I really believe that fate had summoned me, as I never was concerned for the people under the bridge. One never knows what's in store for us, but I live by my instincts, as they have served others, and myself well. I just love funk music still, and always will. His technique is world class. If I can only get his manners and self respect back. I guess sleeping outside with bugs and shit, developes bad habbits, but in six months he will be released back to the public. I hope he doesn't break my heart like so many other talented cats have done.

Peace,

Yeah, the social niceties will have taken a back seat in that environment. they might take a LONG time to come back.... I suggest you tell him you love him but his ball scratching makes it hard to look him in the eye. You have my best wishes.

How does HE feel about it all?
