Death/Punk/Thrash mix in progress (like Abscess)

I've ditched the inverse phase idea for both backing and solo, as it's not very mono compatible. I'm using the STW CD100 instead with a patch called "stereo enhance" or something which seems to work fine.

The recording/iso booth was more like a 3*6 meter room. The drums sound ok I think, but I probably overdid compression on the drum bus again. Vinco at RMS. I find it difficult to para-comp with a Vinco on RMS. Seems like I get phase-smearing in the highs.

I think they want more of a subtle echo thing on the vocals.

Could you advice on a hall reverb then? I've got STW A100, P100 and MasterVerb. And I guess some other free stuff. I try to stay with DSP effect

3x6M? maybe it's drum possitioning then (too late now anyway

). But you are happy with the drum sound so that is all that matters. I couldn't tell you what hall reverb to use. It would just be a matter of experimentation. Hall might not be the one to use either. I would just start there. The main thing is the gate settings. Push the reverb level up and keep the gate fairly tight. You could then use another subtle verb as well without gating. These are things i would try doing. But if you are happy with the sound as it is then all is ok.

I've gone over to mixing fully in XTC-mode now as I seem to get sample-accurate parallel compression then, with little ado.

On the recoding of the drums; I did not use a room mic, just a stereo OH pair, which could have been positioned better imo. But you learn all the time

.

I am generally happy the way the individual sources sound except the toms could have been miced better, though I've manage to isolate via expanders and transient designers.

Yeah mate, I can hear a big improvement with how the drums are sitting. You are getting very close. But do you like it? Are you happy with what's happening? The guitar solo is better too. I still think there is too much reverb on the main vocal. I think we are getting into personal artistic descision here though.

I would have it dryer for most of the track but swell the reverb here and there for effect and impact.

I woud have liked to have a crack at this myself. How many tracks are you running all up? How many tracks on drums?

I am not 100% satisfied, I never will be, but the band is who are calling the shots. Still no word though.

I changed the reverb to a chorus/delay thing, but of course, I could dry it up more. The vocalist apparently wants some wetness to it. Automation could be nice, indeed.

The source is 20 tracks, but I am running more now due to processing.

Drums are 10. (2 x OH, 2 x kick, 2 x snare, 4 x toms)
Guitars are double tracked and double miced.

it's getting better! I like the guitars more than in the older mix. nevertheless a bit more beef on the guitars wouldn't be bad. have you tried spl attacker on the guitar to get a bit more punch? and/or a bit more bass could also be good. for the voice, how about a ducking delay? just an idea...
