the 32bit hash in the first row is a fingerprint/checksum of the file named in the second row.
md5 is one of several hashing algorhythms that can verify if data was altered during transmission. it is not only used for validating downloads but also vpn traffic, although it is considered to be vulnerable meanwhile. we used to add checksums for some important files to burn on dvd, since we had some issues with bad media. this way we could verify if the files were at least burned correctly.

there are lots of tools to check file against mdsum files on common operating systems. the bigger the download, the more important it can be for you to verify if you received a non-corrupted file to avoid re-downloads. I wouldn't be surprised if download managers had the capability to make use of md5sum files (mine does not). vuze/azureus does.
