Promised to get back on the ACPI issue.
Doing as I described earlier in this thread does not remove ACPI. In fact it does nothing. Booting in safe mode and then removing the system/acpi devices in de dev.mgr. renders your win98se useless on the next reboot. After ghosting back my C: drive it is as nothing happened.
You must have a BIOS in which ACPI can be disabled in order to let procedure work.

If you need to remove ACPI from a win98SE installation, reinstall Win98 from a DOS boot, cd to the installation directory and type:
setup.exe /p.i.
This will reinstall Win98 without ACPI. You'll still have all your previous applications, but you'll need to clean up Windows (internet clutter etc.) and reapply the usual tweaks (vcache, virtual memory, disable write-behind etc.)

The setup /p i (no periods in the command line) prevents windows from detecting PnP bios at all. What happens to all PnP-devices?
If you tried this, did it make any difference?

I've used the /p.i. switch many times for running Win98 setup without ACPI. If I don't use the switch, 98 will setup with all the ACPI IRQ devices (as displayed in Device Manager/System Devices). With /p.i. in the command line (including .periods), no ACPI anywhere. You can also employ this when using 98Lite to install Win98; same command line but in the 98Lite setup directory.
Regarding PnP, I always disable this in BIOS - I prefer to let BIOS manage PCI resources, so I can't say if it's effected - but the command line switch I use is /p.i.
Emenelton - I have 1 USB port enabled, and 1 disabled with Win98 device manager, so USB only uses 1 IRQ (4).

I just tried your tip but reinstall process going with errors.
Would you describe in details what are you doing in next steps after the second boot ?

Hi darolek. I remember some sort of message like that when installing win98, I just clicked "OK" and proceeded with the installation. Does your install abort at this stage, or can you continue?

I just managed to get rid of ACPI on a running win98se:
- set the ACPIOtion in the registry (see somewhere in this thread)
- boot in safe mode, start regedit, delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Enum tree
- have all you installmedia ready
- reboot. Go to Add Hardware and add the system device PnP Bios (Failsafe)
- WIN will then reinstall all other devices. It's a good idea (on Intel) to additionally load the inf-installer and the iaa.
Be sure to have a ghost image - it helped me a few times trying this

I have got rid of the clicks!!
I basically did all of the tweaks that I have found on this forum, and a couple that the creamware help.pdf suggests and now I'm there!
I tested recording 16 tracks of 16bit audio @ 44.1 (ASIO2) and it worked fine - for the 5 minute recording that I did.
I then played back 32 tracks for 5 mins - all fine. Both my SCSI drive and my IDE drive handled this fine.
This was all running at 3ms ULLI setting.
I just need to do the masterverb test now, which I have a feeling will be cool.
I have now Done a drive image of this config so that I can always get back to a rockin' system.
I'd just like to take this chance to say a big thankyou to all of you guys (and gals) out there that helped me out. In particular Subhuman and Sandrob who, in my books are true living breathing fire-eating pulsarians.
