I seriously believe there IS something odd about all that . . .

A classic situation I have experienced many times is that if I'm sitting in a studio or room, or even a kitchen, and you are talking to someone and might say: "Hmmmm... maybe we should get a new fridge" then you can be sure that within a week or two the fridge will break down.

I've had this happen with quite a few machines. Now I don't talk about replacing a machine if I'm in the same room as it - really !

On a more normal level I think it does make sense that machines grow to know a standard method of operation. For example, a washing machine will get used to how much it is loaded up, how many cycles it usually does, even how hard you turn the dial. If someone else comes along it will often malfunction because it's not being treated right.

And when I was doing some tech floor support a few years ago I'd turn up at the same peoples desks all the time - I swear that the elctro-magnetic emanations of some people conflict with electronic equipment and cause it to malfunction.

As computing devices continue to shrink down to the level of quantum interactions this may become even more of a problem - who knows what subtle forces or discharges may be happening ?

this is a very interesting subject. We recently had a very interesting thread about electromagnetism effects on humans (your computer screen, those computer cases with plexiglas and neon tubes, aluminium cases, etc) and there is alot already proven and a lot to discover, and to take into consideration, eventhough it may not be necessary to become completely paranoid about that.

I would have posted all the links we found but most of them are in French.
It may be interesting to have the same thread on planetZ.

Quite funny They call it PFM or Murphey's Law. And there's no escape. A friend of mine often makes my computer crash.

He tries to log-on to his Hotmail account, my computer hangs. Reboot, he opens his Hotmail, the machine hangs. Reboot, I open my Hotmail, it works fine. He opens his, my pc hangs again. Reboot. Oki, no more Hotmail now. Next thing, while we're surfing around looking for jokes, he takes the mouse and my mouse cursor disappears. I reboot, the mouse works fine. He takes over and finally things work great. We did not dare to try Hotmail anymore though. A while later, I wanna show him my last project. It hangs.

yes, machines are amazing things.

I have three of them which i've had for 20 years - a Holden panelvan, a fender jazz bass and a Mirafone tuba.

They were all built in '72 (when i was 7), and they all keep doing endless miles without any real maintenance needed.

I've always treated them like appendages, and at times, they have fixed themselves.

We bond with tools in a strong way, i think.
Especially blokes, perhaps. Something about our wiring.

It all ties in with the practice of giving a newly made instrument to a master to play in, imbuing it with life.

This makes me remember Bill Gates in the first (and last too) worldwide official presentation of MS Windows 98 (first edition) and all the problems he had on that system...

I remember that demo I often wonder what happened afterward: did some tech get his arse kicked or was it just forgotten because "sometimes that what happens with Windows" ?
