I knew it too for months. But i dont want 5.0. I thought it was be able to install only the Drivers from 5.0 for my 4.0 or 4.5 Software. Like other Companies do ..for Free.
But nada.. they made it uncompatible in a knowingly strategical "Pissed me of" Marketing way. So I "must" buy the drivers incl. the Software. Why didnt they do it then directly a next step from 4.0 to 5.0 without the 4.5? It makes one Think. Its pure Marketing and nothing to do with Services. There is no differences between 4.0 and 4.5.
4.5 is a Stopgap.
They can make Big money with New Owners, which bought for the first Time their Products and need new Softwares. I have Paid in 4.0 for what, if I have the same in 4.5? They want Handling us like new Owners. Its would be the same Problem thing in the Future (Scope 6) for the Users who are happy now with the 5.0 keys. Should we wait for the Scope 5.5 Stopgap to Purchase Scope 6 for "Free Windows 7 Optimized Drivers"?
Another Time Another Thread in the Future with the same Comments like this. I hope my English is not very pure and Understandable.
I am going to make Yoga now....

Most hardware companies don't spend their time updating drivers for free.. they directly say that this or that piece of hardware is outdated and will not have drivers for any new windows release after XXX.. So if your hardware does not support vista, well, buy a newer one. besides, I don't know many hardware companies still making software and drivers for boards that are 10 years old...
Same goes for software.. take sonar, cubendo, and tons of others, and they only support vista starting on a specific release.. if you want to use it in vista, then buy the upgrade.. No free "vista patch" for this or that release.
Besides, at the time, when buying the 4.5 update, you could gete several extra devices, and also either M&M or S&S packs.. So it was not simply "marketing".
Now, with 5.0 you get several great devices, like the reverbs, the channel strip, the surround thang, and a new software (it's not simply a new color scheme).. so it doesn't seem to be a bad deal either. the software, the driver and the hardware are intimately bound, so it's not possible to use the new driver with the old version.
It remembers me of the guy telling that SC (well CW back then) were stupid because they didn't want to let him write a driver for linux.. the guy simply didn't understand that without the software and the plugins, the driver was pure and simply useless.
So do some yoga

and think about it twice.. they're still supporting 10-year old hardware (that still rocks better than most newborns), and give a free update for those who bought the last update from the previous company! and you even get some awesome stuff as a bonus!
