traditionally, christmas was the time that the poor rioted and burned the well-to-do's neighborhoods, at least as much as possible. in fact, the holiday celebration was banned in NYC at one point and "stille nacht" was written to try and convince the rabble to make christmas a family holiday instead of a beg for money, food, and alchohol and then riot day.....

the "current "traditional" christmas is the fesitval of Tammuz(or Horus), son of Semaramis(or Astarte or Ishtar or Isis). in fact the "christmas tree" is traditionally a "Tammuz tree"......

and Astarte or Ishtar? Easter is named after her.....

stardust wrote:As to the 'pagan' historic relations:

the midwinter and the Rauhnaechte have been either sun rebirth festivals or similar to the celtic samhain around 1st Nov the time where the doors to the realms of the spirits (Otherrealms) were open.

There are lots of such habits embedded in the christian rituals nowadays.
And also the agnostics enjoy the mystic feelings of Halloween and Santa.
those celtic(which have their roots in germanic, bohemian culture. celtic poeople come from bohemia...) and other sun festivals are the same festivals the sumerians, babylonians, egyptians, greeks and romans celebrated. humans are nortoriously bad innovaters. rituals and lore are just updated for each "new" civilization....

traditionally, Tammuz was born on or about Dec. 25th. Jesus was not....

whatever, celts claim bohemian lineage and the bagpipe certainly bears them out, so does mitachondrial dna...

...and the religions are the same regardless of the romance involved or the age.

that's not religion until you worship those things.
theories about how these things start is one thing, but not necessarily what happened. if the San people hadn't been wiped out by city life after the fall of apartheid, you could have witnessed the genuine stoneage religion lived by the original stoneage people in the world...
