Hi all,

As the topic says I am intereasted in a quality set of strings, nothing super high price wise as I have seen some can go around US$1000.00, but the ones I have looked at so far on the net are-

Garritans Personal Orchestra: This is a full ensemble and comes with kontakt *player, sort of a waste since I own full version of kontakt, im sort of paying for additional instrumentation I do not need and also the NI player, kind of wasted money..

Edirol Orchertal VST: This could be cool, still more instruments than I need, but atleast it comesd with its own front end player. Very mixed reviews on its sound quality though...

Vienna Strings Horizons: This is the most expensive disk of the three I looked at, it comes with no player, though this is not a problem since I own kontakt, though kontakt is not a supported format, this shouldnt be a prob since kontakt can load gigga files, I could be wrong..

Any others aside from that I should check out? Theres also a brand new series from NI aswell, but again these offer full orchestras I only need strings..

Any ideas or info on any of the three or suggestions would be greatly appreciated..

Cheers!

look into http://www.bestservice.de there are more affordable packages like Garritan Lite, Symphony Orchestra Silver, VSL some too

http://www.wizoo.com you may find whole or part Strings with some downloable formats

and you find demos there, good choice

At $250 how much extra could you be be paying for the NI player with GPO? By the way the samples can still be loaded into Kontakt if you have the latest update. I think the GPO is the best value but I'm not an expert.

With GPO you also get Cubasis, so that'll really be pushing up the cost

I have Garritan Strings (Akai lite version) as well as GPO. The Akai strings costs more than GPO and all you get is strings. But I think GPO is probably just as good. If you use contact GPO is certainly easier to use than Akai samples...

hello I have just googled to here, and registered to learn or discuss about the subject you are now on. I do find it almost cool that you are already there, great, I will try and think of an in telligent question you haven't touched on yet. The guy loooking for strings, you been to Tascams site recently? there are more than only three, although you did name a couple there. I was gonna post the url to that GPO offer and ask if anyone had seen it, but I am now just watchin this thread

I read somewher that Cubasis is now 24 bit ,what that really amounts to I don't know for sure, but ..I wonder which version bundles here.

what's your budget? If you need really high quality strings, try GOS strings, or Vienna's Opus. GPO strings is good, but the quality won't really surprise you. I use GPO, but I find that most of the "sheen" you'd expect from strings have to be created through mixing techniques. On the other hand, GPO is probably much easier to program than Opus or GOS.

Do you find that your computer crashes with the GPO? I have been having issues since I started using the Kontakt players. It's an annoyance but I love the sounds of these things.

not much. GPO has been running quite stable for me. But I use a GPO+cubase SX2 combination, which seems to be the most stable combination for now. kontakt player has serious issues with all versions of Logic. Not too sure about sonar.

How fast is your computer and how much RAM? Mine is 1.8 megahertz and a gig of RAM. Maybe I need to tweak it? I have ACPI on and HT (I think). I haven't done any tweaking yet.

I have the same specs as you Braincell, and have no stability issues.

I'll tweak it then.
