Absolute field recording ignorance

I finally bought a Minisdic recorder to capture some good environmental sound. I also want to capture audio from the phone.

This will sound incredibly ignorant, but anyway...

I have a mic input on the minidisc player and a line-in. The trouble is some of my sources will be mono (ie from the phone pickup jack).

So my question is, does it matter if I plug a mono feed (ie cable) into a stereo mic input or line input ?

And if I buy a good mic will that typically be a stereo source or mono ? The minidisc player says "stereo mic in".

Sony has this stereo mic that is built-in to their cams, and comes (optional) with the minidisk player.
Far most of the mics are mono, they made it stereo to fit their mic or for line input I guess.

And a mono jack fits into the stereo without problems, sending the same signal to L and R inputs...

PS [OT] As silly as it gets: my handycam has an iLink option, yesterday I discovered it's firewire

) After over a year and now I'm finally streaming digital audio & video over it. Still messing big time with compression options tho.

Thanks At0mic. For some reason I've had this paranoid fear instilled in me never to put mono plugs in stereo inputs...
