I am new to the scope platform and one thing that I noticed right away is that all of the modules that I have heard don't seem to be able to get to the high hat sound used in 99 % of all dance songs. It seems simple enough, but there seems to be no modeling solution for the 909 classic opened high hat sound. That is something that I really need . I guess I will have to use a sample , but it would be nice to have a modeled version that is editable without losing the ultra classic sound. I hate to put it this way but I do want to this same sound found in every record and be able to use it and tweak it , but not loose it's original character. I am a professional D J and I do my own remixes for my sets. I want my work to blend in and sound like the other records when I mix it in.

To my knowledge the TR909 sounds are sampled ones.

nope, 909 as well as 808 sounds are synthesized. Afaik the attack manual shares some info, how to set them up.
Might be useful for the modular as well.

Sorry wolf but you're wrong. All sounds on the 808 were analogue synthesis as you say, as were the sounds on the 909 except for the cymbals and hihats which were samples.

That's what I wanted to say, at first...

Can't find anything on hihats exactly, but the schematics and explanations on http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/Jul02/a ... ts0702.asp in S.O.S. and http://www.cim.mcgill.ca/%7Eclark/nordm ... ssion.html from the Nordmodular book... It says synthesis for cymbals in S.O.S. btw.

For a device that does these on CW dsp, check out Flexor's 80ies drums patch. Flexor has the FM osc, and most snappy envelopes for percussion. A mod of that one, and some reading on the above links gave me the HH sounds that comes closest to these of 808/909 IMO.

Read a little further at0m|c

From SOS article:
the TR909 dispenses with all of this by incorporating a digital sample of a genuine cymbal. In other words, at least one (and, in truth several more) of the instruments in the TR909 are generated by a 'samploid' drum machine. This means that parts of the TR909 are little different in concept and implementation from any other synth with PCM samples as oscillators.

So if I'm using a sample of a 909 open HH, basically that's equivalent to the original since the original sound was not created by an analog synthesizer. That's really cool info. I never knew that the 909 was a combination of samples and analog synthesizer drums.

thanks for clarification. Of course you're right, 909 uses 6-bit samples for hihat/cymbals

The Modular III has a factory patch called 909 Groover. It contains the 909 samples.
The samples are used with drum sample oscilators.
Just a hint.

808 & 909 Groover (in fact any sample-based Mods) don't work on my Mac - one of the many ModIII bugs that never got fixed (preset saving, anyone?), so may not work for skate either.

hehe, Chris...

BTW, if you load a 909 open hihat in (say) Kontakt soft sampler, and randomly modulate the pitch, volume and attack, you get a real life sounding hat.
It's easy done

Wavelength Drumvox has 3 closed and 5 open hi-hats in 909 style in the factory presets.

The detailed params are great to compare what parts influence the sound in which way.
And one can continue tweaking from there to melt into a new sound (for example) - it's midi controlable...

cheers, Tom
