Tonight I will be trying out my new system.
Please send positive PlanetZ vibes towards my computer. I am praying that everything goes well.
I bought an Antec Sonata case, so it should be nice and quiet.
Inside will be a Gigabyte GA8PE667 ULTRA2 motherboard (INTEL i845 chipset) which I got for free from the studio I work at. I have put a Pentium 4 2.4 GHz CPU on it and installed 512 MB of Kingston RAM (all I could afford right now)and a Seagate 120 MB harddrive with 8 MB cache. As well I bought a DVD writer for back up.
This will also be my first system with XP.
Because of all the problems I have read about on PlanetZ I am actually afraid to try and install the Creamware stuff in it. I bought an M-Audio 24/96 card as an alternative, in case I have a total disaster...
My old system was so rock solid that I decided to keep it going with the Pulsar system until I am sure that the new system is stable.
I will update the forum as I go.

you may have problems but if you set it up properly from the start, they should be very minor. as i remember, the 845 chipset mobos were all pretty problem free.

BTW, If I pull the Pulsar card out of the old system and try to install it on the new one, can I just put it back in the old one if the new system doesn't cooperate?
Or will I have to go through the entire install process again on the old system?
In other words does the card "know" that I tried to install it in the new system?

just don't uninstall it on the old system(software and driver). if you put it back in, windows will recognize the change and try to reinstall the driver. the worst case would be the need of the cd to locate and copy the driver.

I uninstall and reinstall my CWA cards all the time, no problems.

Weeeeell, there you are, spent all day and it won't even post.
I think the motherboard is dead. Actually I think it makes sense because it seemed to me that the system at the Studio I worked at was getting funky near the end.
Always remember, when you get something for free you get exactly what you pay for.
I'll go out tomorrow and buy a new motherboard.

intel d865perl. you should be able to get one under $100. they work great.

Just a simple thing to note,
I always had AMD boards and when I switched to an Intel, I built the PC everything was connected 100% and it seemed dead, in the end I found out that, not "only" does the power connection need to be connected but also this little 4pin connection to get power to the board, it had me stumped because on the AMD boards there is no 4pin connection needed.
Just checking..

Thanks for the obscure detail, but we did do that!
The MOBO has a single orange LED on it and that was lit up, so we had power.
The origins of this MOBO are not really known, for all I know the guy who gave it to me may have known it wasn't functioning...I won't waste any time with it. If I buy a new MOBO I get a more up to date chip set anyway!
Will update when new info is available!

the 845 is good. i have an 850 and it's great. the 815 was good. the bx worked fine...

Can't get to second stage of the install of XP.
Restart and it goes back to square one.

sooooo.....
The brand new hard drive must be screwed up.
Will not allow anything to be installed on it. Tried installing 98SE and that wouldn't work either.
Back to the computer store...

the extra hd won't be a waste if it's not the problem, storage is always useful....
you could test the memory in another machine, maybe. does the hd format?
