Asus MOBO and USB Ports

I think some of you might be using the same mobo so I wanted to ask for help.

I have an Asus PT4533-C mobo which has 4 USB ports on the back. Two of these ports don't seem to be functioning. The two non-functioning ports are identified as ports 3 & 4 in the user manual (USB 2.0). I've never actually used them before but when I tried recently to install some USB devices there, nothing worked.

The only user reference to these ports I could find had something to do with a jumper on the main board for a USB header.

The other two ports work fine. Any suggestions or ideas? I assume it's a config issue but who knows. This PC is configed with Win ME & Win Xp on separate partitions. Neither OS recognizes the ports so I'm pretty sure it's not an OS issue.

Maybe it is set up in BIOS ?

I have a P4P800, and there I have to set up how many ports (up to 8 in pairs of 2) I want to use.

most of those older(!) motherboards require an additional driver(if it's truly the 2.0 port) as usb2.0 was not fully implemented at that time. they may also require the jumper change and the front header card to operate. i advise against them as they will certainly eat resources and require an additional irq most likely shared with a pci slot.(probably the one you're using

won't a usb hub work for you? they work fine with dongles regardless of what the manufacturers say........

Thanks for reponding Gary. I almost forgot about this thread. Actually, your reply was correct. I was able to solve the problem with a driver install. I didn't realize it at the time I bought and installed the mobo because I wasn't using any USB devices. Over time, I started acquiring USB devices and that's how this all started. I tried plugging something into one of the two USB ports identified in the user manual as being USB 2.0 enabled ports and nothing worked there. I found out through a lot of digging that the software was there on my mobo software disc - just wasn't part of the normal driver installation routine for some odd reason. I guess they decided not to make USB 2.0 part of the normal driver install. Not sure why unless it was all an afterthought.

Anyway, once I installed the 2.0 drivers everything functioned as expected. The sad part to all this was, a couple of weeks later my mobo died and I had to replace it anyway. Upgraded to an ASUS P4P800SE which is very nice.

Damn I'll have to try that. I have an Asus with 2 USB ports not working. I thought all the ports were USB 2.0 since 2.0 is backwards compatible.
