i do not own a I/O box yet, but i'm splitting my luna's analog stereo input into a left and a right channel and have two mono channels instead of one stereo.
can i do the same with the 8 channels of the 2496 box or are those just mono??

8 ins and 8 outs. Feel free to connect them in stereo pairs or mono, or whichever suits you best; you could mix 5.1 on it and still have a stereo channel available.
It's a bit like asking 'a modular patch has 4 outputs, is that 2 stereo or 4 mono'. That's all undeceided really, it's your connections and setup that will determine that.

the question wasn't to make one stereo out of two monos, but to make two monos out of ONE stereo by panning two different signals far left and far right...

It's 8 mono rca in, 8 mono rca out

...but of course you can make two monos out of a stereo input......

Ahh - don't make it worse Gary
There are no stereo inputs(/outputs). They are: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8. They are not 1l, 1r, 2l, 2r, 3l, 3r, 4l & 4r.

thx for the info!
that means if i have a 2496 box with 8 monos + the stereo ínput on the luna pci-card = 10 monos i can use simultanously, right?
is anyone experienced in using two 2496 boxes?

yes, works perfect, really!
16 times mono in-out.
most easy part of my studio, just need to take care the Z-link cable plugs keep fit well in the card's slots when moving the computer a bit.

kewl!
do you necessarily need that extra adat/z-link-expansion card (which is about 200€) to run a second 2496 box?

Yep, you will need the expansion board, since the Luna2/Scope Home only has a single ZLink and no ADAT. A single ZLink connection will handle 8 mono channels up to 24bit/96khz.
You should look at the A16U also, it has 16 mono inputs and outputs, and will run off ZLink or ADAT.

yep, i did consider the A16U - but I can get two 2496's + the expansion card for less money

Or even an extra luna would do
Guess it is as easy to get seconhanded as a exp. card

but the expansion card would save both a pci-slot and money - and still fully meet my needs
I wonder why so many people are selling the A16 on ebay... no one is trying to get rid of the 2496 box.

well, most of those are the old version, and those are more or less likely to (partially) fail or to develope noisy channels (due to aging components). No big deal, but much unappreciated by those not familiar with a soldering iron...
the old A16 has 18-bit converters and delivers 16 bits of relevant data, since the original conversion had 2 xtra bits, those 16 remaining are pretty good.
but possibly not state of art today ?
All and everything has to have 24/96 at least

For me it doesn't make sense to connect my TX802 or Proteus/2 or some Casios with 24 bit resolution, but I might be missing the point

At least the components in the A16 have a good reputation among audiophiles (some parts also used in better hifi gear)
cheers, Tom
