ProTone vs real Pro-One
Here are 2 files to compare the 2 synths :
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/mks-80/Pro%20One.wav
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/mks-80/Pro%20Tone%20.wav
Only the snare drum is not made with the synths.
Both synths go trough the same signal path/effects (exept the hardware goes first through the A/D convertion (A16 Ultra)).
The same midi tracks are sent to both synths.
(the filter opening/closing can also be done by a midi CC to control the Pro One filter via the filter CV in).
I used the patches from the unease web site
here :
http://www.unease.se/proone.htm
It was really difficult to make them sound exactly the same, and sometimes had a 30% discripancy in knobs position...)
I guess 2 Pro Ones won't also sound the same at the exact same knob position ..
Enjoy.
PS : my Pro One is healthy and the VCOs are calibrated).

Quicktime can open a file in 'Kiosk modus', just a 'bar' and a play/stop button.
You can click in the bar to jump to different track positions.
But also in full mode you can use the bar this way, like with other players
If you put both files as one file, you can jump through both files, on the fly, instantly starting at about the same position in both files.
This makes it very easy to hear differences between the 'same' file positions, skipping intro's and outro's and the like
Thought it was clear what I meant without much words, hope it is now

Hi,
Yes the Pro One has more punch, goes deeper in the low and high ends, and sounds bigger and warmer.
The difference is pretty obvious when you listen to the "whrorau" sound (filter opening and closing on a fat PWM sound).
I guess the word "analog" should explain everything ..
Still ProTone is probably one of the best sounding VA synth around and is very punchy.
On my NS-10M monitor, it was sometimes difficult to hear the difference between the 2 synths ... but not on my HD-600 headphones.
I would say the ProTone comes very close in reproducing the Pro-One basses, though you have to equalize to go as deep in the low end.
But not the leads ... don't know why though.
Yo hubird,
here is the file you wanted :

Cheers,

Cheers,
exactly the opposite was once the 'main' critic point at CWA's ProOne emulation in mag review: the original doesn't have that much punch at all...On 2005-04-21 11:57, proximo wrote:

no comment from my side as I haven't listened to the files here yet.
cheers, Tom
@garyb :
So the questions are :
Are they different patches which I made on purpose to make them sound different?
Or was it impossible to make them sound the same after hours of tweaking ??
I leave it up to you ...

I find the frames of reference in this kind of test are a bit wobbly.
The Pro-One sounds a bit like the ProTone with a bit of vinco
....or something.
It's an interesting thing to try, though, and thanks
It all leads me to wonder if my Noah Pro One is fatter or skinnier than another pro-one (or my tuba, for that matter
