We have had several talks in the Z about Flash from Macromedia, some loves it and some hate it.

Again, the same thought comes to my mind: Flash is the future of the web...

The future of the web is RSS. Open source software is the future of the web. Proprietary crap is bullshit. Flash is yet another way for a greedy corporation to scam us for something which should be free. I hate being constantly told I need to update my flash player and when given the choice I always click on the flashless alternative. The 2 web companies I hate the most are Macromedia And Real Media. The internet is movng away from the web and towards much more compelling audio and eventually video content. Macomedia's focus is on the web. Bye Macromedia.. hello podcasts!

isn't a podcast just a file, really?

I can see you didn't read the articles Brain... have a go and you'll understand that what you are saying is exactly what Macromedia is doing, video...

Well, of course we don't like corporations pushing us to the edge, no body likes it...

Nevertheless, if we like it or not, Flash is going to actually swallow the market. I am talking about statistics and use, not likes and dislikes, this is something else and is very subjective.

You will never see Macromedia on this site. I see a trend towards simplicity and open source software in recent months. Tools such as phpBB which planetz uses and wordpress are examples of open source software. If I was making a video I would use Premiere. If I was making 3D animation, I would use Autodesk or Softimage.

Look at Google. People love Google because it doesn't have a bunch of crap on it. I see Macromedia as a crap generating tool.

It's an mp3 file with an RSS enclosure which uses a special client to subscribe to programs. Now millions of people are using the internet without viewing the web on a daily basis.

As the world goes broadband, the web will be all about rich media. RSS with enclosures is a part of that. So is Flash animation & video.

Flash multimedia is a far better platform imho than Real, Mediaplayer, and Quicktime, so I think Flash will eventually dominate that area.

blah..bullshit.

Lately I have had the honor to use SVG professionally. They do pretty amazing things with it. Have a look at this: http://www.adobe.com/svg/examples.html
Oh yes, you need a plugin, unless you use Opera 8. Next major Firefox version will have SVG support. You will NEVER be able to view Flash without a plugin.

This is the future, with SMIL.

Even Microsoft has admitted, that standards compliance is a good thing (http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2005/07/29/445242.aspx)

XML will... no, rules the world.

I think people tend to judge by what they like or dislike, instead sending a cold look to the situation of the internet and it's future.

There are hundreds of platforms and some will succed and many will die, unfortunately the net WILL be a monopoly in a few years, at least, in a certain percentage.

Macromedia is not just about Flash, is about the whole lot of Multimedia and is already wherever you look at: TV, celular phones, games, Cinema, Banks, Players of all sorts among them MP3 players, DVD players, etc., etc., etc.

I understand some of you dislike what people do with Flash, but that has nothing to do with the platform, you should understnad that.

Net is going to be a monopoly? No way!
Net is farther from monopoly than almost ever!

Flash is a cool toy for games and things like that, but real applications and informative web sites will never be flash-only.

I'm a web professional since 1997 and since then I've been in ONE project, that utilized Flash. They wanted to have a "simulator" of real world machine.
Also Nokia has some cool mobile phone test beds in Flash.

But why SVG/SMIL are cool? They are XML. They are ascii. They are open!
Most data these days is XML: you want a HTML table presentation? Fine, just transform (XSLT) it into HTML. Want a graph? Here we go, transform it into SVG. Want to print a paper? Here comes XSL-FO and PDF is there.
I don't see any place for Flash.

Flash Pro with Actionscript 2 can handle amazing amounts of data in an extremely efficient way, relating easily with external programs and data. It has become a powerful database tool so far, comparable to many other good database languages. Common, don’t call Flash a toy, this is like calling Nuendo a toy. You are outdated about what Flash can do I think, Studio 8 is a tremendous revolution people are not aware of.

Of course Flash will not work alone; it is not its purpose anyway.
