Timeworks compressor is better tan Vinco !!

Post by musurgio »

hI,
I am posting this after i MADE SOME critical listenings with vinco and timeworks X.
Vinco has NEVER enouph attack to let the low freqiuencies go by !!
Compressor X behaves like a hardware compressor.
Reminds fo DBX 160 very much !
Vinco never amazes me and sounds a little bit clinical to me.
I tried all settings believe me.
Compressor X gives some warmthg to the sound without taking anything away.
And it compresses really well.
By the way all Timeowrks plugins sound fabulous !!
I have never heard any compressor on Scope that is better than Timeworks.
Hope someone will make some...

Dimitrios

vinco vs stw x

Post by Wired »

there was a comparison of vinco and real 1176 somewhere here and the most important thing that i remember the tester saying is that the input has to be in the red on the vinco to make any change whatsoever, ...its true, unless its driven almost hard , it doesn't do much (just effects the image), now i bought alot of stw, i'm going to check out the demo of x right now, (i have external comp, but hey, what the...

Does the compressorX really work in 4.5 under XP? In my system it seems to be broken
I liked its sound very much too, and since I work under XP, I can only use Vinco.
Also the Vintage EQs from STW don't work properly, but 4080L and Mastering comp are ok.
Did somebody make similar experiences?

Sorry but what do you like about vinco ?
Try this.
Put a kick that kas serious low end.
Then try vinco.
There is no way you will be able to hear the low end anymore !!!

I try live kik drums on both vinco and compressorX but I prefer vinco sound. Because it's bigger and more juicy sound than compressorX.

But for the Vinco, I mostly use RMS mode all times.. It's more natural sound to my ears, unless I want to pump the sound.

Just my thought..

I am testing now again with a drumloop an waves bass on it for super bass at the low end (60 hz).
Vinco does not let the very low pass much compressor-x (except for extreme compressing) lets more bass, so I am sure my tests are good.

Interesting ... I have the UAD 1176 plugin, and after a while stopped using it for kick and bass because it tended to kill the bottom end. Couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong (I'm just a hack anyways). Maybe it's inherent in the sound of a 1176. I'll have to try STW compressorX now.

you test is completely subjective as long as you don't post any samples of the same material compressed by both compressors and tell us which settings you used.

You're not making much sense anyway, since you're talking about compressors and then talk about how they do or do net let low frequencies pass. Compression only works on the dynamics, not on the frequency content.
I'm perfectly able to for instance accentuate the attack of a heavy kickdrum with vinco by turning up the attack and adjusting the input and ratio controls for more or less compression.

btw I don't have the compressor X so I can't comment on whether it is or isn't better than the vinco. I'm sure they're different though.

Vintage EQ seems to work fine here on XP. The only problem I have is that sometimes after saving and reopening a project with vintage eq used as inserts in STM 1632, I am unable to open the surface of the eq to change settings.

King of snake you are totally out of the blue here... sorry.
I don't need any lessons on waht is compressor as I might know that better from you (MAYBE) after 25 years in business .
The only comment was that vinco kills the very low end -to my ears- if that is needed tosay agian an again.
Everything does alter the sound one or the other way.
You only have to listen for the small and sometimes bigger details...
Iam not trying to o anything else but share what I hear on my tests.
I has always that problem with vinco and although Ipaid 200 Euos to buy it I never liked it much...
I will try to post some examples when I FIND THE TIME THANKS>

Hi musurgio

Have you tried increase attack time to be around > 20ms? And may be try it in RMS mode with ratio at 20.

Just wanna know how these setting change the very low end respond..

PS. The compressor are true to affect the dynamics, but it also has 'Character' for its own compression, which involved in frequency change also. Every compressor has effects on frequency respond differently.

Of course I have increased the attack.
By the way Vinco is usable only with attack set to maximum to me because I don't like compressors f... up with the transients of the sound.
Vinco does not amaze me.

that's ok.
you probably wouldn't like 1176s or LA2s either. that's no big deal, that's why so many different devices exist.

Hey Guys,

you all seem to have an Idea on compressors/Vincos.

My Question is:

I use the Vinco for my Guitar when recording.

You guys always turn the input of vinco to the max.,
or you leave in the middle?

This is just an opinion. What do I know.

Changing the input means changing the amount of compression, afaik. So you want to adjust the input and envelope parameters to get the sound you want, THEN adjust the output volume LAST. You shouldn't 'leave' the dials anywheres. And when you record - you're better off recording DRY, and adding any effects afterwards, that way you have maximum flexibility.
