XP Hangs caused by Scope

Post by poidog »

I think I am on my last legs with Scope. I have been using it for almost two years and never gotten it into a stable state. Creamware support simply doesn't exist anymore apparently. I'm run through this issue on the board before, but thought I'd try one last time to see if there were any other diags or options I could try. I love the sound of the card, but this seems to be getting worse and worse.

Here is a summary of the problem. Running XP SP 2, with scads of memory and CPU. I'm monitoring the basic resources constantly and I'm not taxing the system above 60% of capacity. The Scope card does NOT share an IRQ with any other device. The box is not overheating. Ive tested with many different apps (Live, Sonar, Sonic Foundry) I always see the same behavior. Things will be running normally and the entire PC hangs and has to be hard reset. Sometimes it takes it takes an hour for this to happen, sometimes as little as 10 to 15 minutes. When Iook at the crash logs (if I get one), it always references sfp.exe. I have done a complete reinstall including cleaning the registry. I built this machine specifically to the specs given me by Creamware when my previous DAW was having similar problems. So......WTF?

The only USB that I have connected is an iLok from Waves. Is there anyway of testing for a defective PS other than to replace it?

we all know that computer is a "science"... I mean, many of us have a stable system with scope boards so there MUST be an answer for sure.... Of course, spending money for an unstable system is the worst thing for a musician !

Please, just check these points :

1) windows XP Pro SP2 and other softwares : just use official softwares as cracked ones can be responsible for instability...

2) Are there people (scope fanatics) usinng the same motherboard than yours successfully ? For example, recent Asus boards (some of them) appeared to be not very reliable with scope system... since my P4G8X (expensive and not very stable) i went for intel mobos..

3) Have you tried to run your system gradually ? I mean, if you install all your plugins, devices in one go, it is hard to detect which of them takes the blame...

4) what about your RAM ? You should test with another one (i have only bought corsair or supertalent one without regret) as instability is sometimes related to RAM problems.... Just check tyour timings (too agressive?), the brand, ... reduce your ram (512 instead of 1 Go for ex and try both sticks... may be one of them is out of order ?).

5) As for soniccore support, they can only give you a hand if it is a matter of soniccore gear... In this case, they can repair your board. But as scope and your board can start (for a while), soniccore support can't do anything for you, for sure ! It seems to be computer related problem, that's it... As the problem happens after a while, it is what i call INSTABILITY. Computer problem and nothing else... But you can fix your problem, for sure.

keep the faith !

was the previous DAW a completely different system? So the Creamware card is the only hardware that was the same on both systems? If so maybe the card simply has a hardware defect?

I had a similar problem, years ago with my "PowerXTC", a pro board with classic i/0s. Finally I sent it to CW and:
The card was broken!
Within 2 weeks I had a new one!
Since that everything runs fine!
No charge at all!
Ralf@SC will help you out, I'm sure!
AFAIK they had some kind of testing-tool for gen2 boards @ cw, but not
for gen1's like pulsar1.
And I'm sure SC has this tool right now...
Does anyone here know the actual email of Ralf?
Hope you will try that last step....
Cheers from Cologne,

rb@soniccore.com

actually they should give you a DMA (ref for support) butif i remember well, repairing a board costs 100e or something. cheap if it a scope project or pro. but if it is a "home", just buy used one ! Could you test it on another computer first ?

My card never worked stable, so they didn't charge anything...
I think we have the same prob here, as this card never worked stable for 2 years...
And that's not normal for a luna/ps...
And I think it's better to pay 100Euros and get a FIXED one back than taking
the risk of a 2nd hand one (which won't be cheaper anyway...).
Just my 2 Euro-cents... :D
