One can buy a 400-500 USD 4GB Piano Library from many different developers, and hey, you too can sound just like Chopin, if you buy into that jive / hype.

16 different layers that no known controller can even send out velocities to trigger the massive layers. But hey, the demo and the KVR guys say it's great, and they are all Cinematic Composers.....................BULL PUCKEY.

Here's my 80 USD Upright Piano library, where I used the 6 year old 500MB Clinton Upright. It has only 4 velocity layers, but I have made a performance where GS4's awesome IR Reverb can be applied. It uses a recording of the Pedal Down, and when the pedal is up, you can hear the Taj Mahal space.

Also used is the 40 USD Sonic Implants Vintage String Boxes " CD ".

I believe that Scope DSP mixers and FX are crucial for the big sound of these old " out dated " libraires.

Gigastudio 4 just plain Kicks Ass. The dynamic range is so clean and noiseless, and even makes my K2 instruments sound better, and all of my " ancient libraries ".

Just like STS samplers still sound phenominal, so do old small libraries from days of Yore. It's the way you mix and master your final sounds that makes things happen, not those gigantic ChiggaByte sized rip off " DVD's ".


When XITE-1 and GS4 are infused,...I will be as happy as a Pig In Shit !!

Well if it wasn't for guys here, I would be fumbling around w/ 2" Tape sync still.

I am very grateful for the tips and tricks members have given me, and eventually I will be able to apply this to a live mix also.

I have learned one thing though, as good as my live stereo tracks might sound, when it comes to mastering and summing I have barely scratched the surface of Scope, and the overwhelming amount of plugs we have at our disposal.

I pray that when XITE-1 is released, my ears, fingers, and mixing knowledge will have been better honed.

I agree, this forum and the people here is a great resource. I read here every day and learn something new almost every day. PlanetZ is like a new family to me !

I find the STS series sounds better in the bass register but not good upper register sounds.

Speaking of ridiculously cheap "old " giga samples ,have you got the Peter Ewers cathedral organ from Notre Dame de Laeken . I think I got it for U.S. $15 ...now if only I could play it

It was re vamped using DEF.

Funny thing, all of the old 16 bit Gigasampler libraries are dirt cheap, and sound even better hen they get converted to GS3 / GS4.

The Notre Dame Cathedral's stops can be mapped to faders or expression pedals for reall low dynamcis, and balls to the walls Full stops. Pretty Fierce.


15 USD is definately a sore dick deal.

I'm sorry but there are too many places where the attack sounds like the hammers are covered with aluminum foil. Can you tweak the amount of "hit"?

You know what......you are absolutely right. Live this is actually desirable when guitars, bass, B4000, and drums are in the mix.

I believe that GS4 can use GigaEditor and DEF / iMIDI to take the highest sample and filter them.

I shall try it on the other Upright too. That one is full of hammered wood, while the Clinton sounds like an old " Tack Piano".

I will still keep this version for barroom brawling type of gigs, as it is just perfect when tickling the 88's with other players who dig it's inaccurate sound.

I really like the release layer on the clinton . All those groans and bumps when the mutes come down , but then I've also got a soft spot for those old 60's/70's hohner electrics as well . I got my uprights at scitscat out of Florida . Is DEF a filter in gs4 cause I've been looking for it but I cant find it ,maybe cos I'm only running ensemble ?

Giga Editor. GS3 also has it, but it is really been upgraded in GS4.

I am in touch with a developer as we speak. He is going to guide me through the way to use DEF on the highest velocities to lighten them up a little.

I hated GigaPiano 2 because of it's unnaturual sound at maximum velocity, and since I love Honky Tonk pounding, I quit using it.

The new Piano called Continuos Velocity Piano is that piano re done w/ DEF.

So I shall try it out and see, because I just love this piano for jamming, but in it's solo performance as I did above, it is a little too much like a Tack Piano from a Nickelodeon.

The Steinway Upright ( Chickering ) is better, but it's wood is pretty noticable also.

Both of the Uprights would benefit from the small conversion.

I will let you know w/ a pm within a week. Then we could share the results.

Another workaround is to use my heavy ass Oberheim MC3000. It had 48 programmable velocity curves, and could tame any library to taste.

I can't use that gear live anymore unless I have a union house w/ stage hands. Even then they usually scatter when they see me on the dock.

Strange how your clinton sound so different from mine! I think you might have some frequency cancellation coming from the impulse. Maybe you could try to play with a short predelay on the impulse and find a "sweet spot"

The impulses sadly aren't very editable. Changing the mic positioning is a really cool feature in GPulse / GS4 though. The Clinton is so clunky sounding and prefect for down & dirty music live.

Have you heard SamleTekk's Black Grand for 79 bucks........talk about sweet.

I love the Pedal Down embedded Impulses the best as they make the sound pretty realistic IMHO.

No, I didn't check their latest production, their steiny and white grand junior after some tweazting sound good to me. My keyboard (novation remote) is not good enought for better sample (I find the action not even).

*By the way, you should try hifiboom reveb as a substitute to the impulse, it give me some good result with the white grand

Seb from plogue have begun porting bidule on Quad apparently, so I restart the idea to of using a remote controller (I think of using Nintendo DS through wifi) for project selection.... but it is still too soon to decide. The amount of time to invest for porting OSClib to the NDS and check wifi interoperability need more evidence then just a declaration!
